I never bothered with brown rice because I thought it was a little expensive and just generally a pain in the ass to not be able to get a big 10kg bag of it. However, I am really getting sick of white steamed rice. I can never eat the full amount that comes in the bento now and watching other people greedily stuffing gobs of the stuff into their mouth makes me want to throw up in my mouth a little. I realize now that I desperately miss whole grains.

I don't know how Japanese people keep claiming that plain white rice is the healthiest thing on earth and should be eaten 3 times a day. I wish Japan would get on board with whole grains.
I haven't bought white rice once in my 4 years in japan, although I had it when eating out and bentos ofcourse. I get the mugi-no-megumi breaf or muffins that at least claim to have some whole grain in it and also miss the multigrain bread (sometimes get it at import shops as well as wholegrain pasta) Soba |

Well Japanese people are doing something right with their white rice, with long lifespans and low obesity levels...

I think I handle empty carbs kind of ok, considering I just eat shit all the time and am not enormous

I eat copious amounts of white rice and white bread, yet because I work out all the time it doesn't effect me.

ya'll need dieting buddies!
or a whatchamacallit... like, a sponsor. anytime you walk into a FAMILY MART or walk by a bakery and have the urge to eat everything in sight, call your sponsor so they can totally talk you out of it. or you can sack up and exercise some self control. or whatever. maybe i'm oversimplifying things, but isn't losing weight pretty much basic math? if calories burned - calorie intake > 0, you lose weight? meh, either way, i'm cool with my tubgut. it keeps me warm at night...

A few other JETs and I have formed a weight loss group in my town. We meet once a week and talk diets and track our weight loss. Sadly, there is one woman in the group who really needs to lose weight, but doesn't believe in the 'basic math' part of weight loss. She thinks 'cause she rides her bike to work (about 10 minutes a day) and does her own cooking she should be losing weight...never mind that she eat large portions, eats school lunch every day etc. etc. etc.
