View Full Version : Visiting Australia

I'm tempted to have a holiday in Australia, probably at new year. I know there are probably cheaper, closer and more interesting destinations, but Oz is one of those places Brits like to talk about visiting, but never do because it's expensive to get there and involves spending half the trip on planes.

Anyone got any recommendations, or comments on what airport to change at (direct flights being twice the price)?

I find a lot of people stopover at Singapore since Changi airport is actually nice. Splits the plane trip up rather nicely.

Go to Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. Everywhere else is shit. I would go to Brisbane since they have some great beaches and it will be hot.

well in that case your cheapest flight is usually with jetstar, which will take you direct to cairns and brisbane... sometimes you can get cheaper with some sort of promotion but i think the last 3 times ive been back to aus they came out cheapest... under 10 man with taxes is cheap... most other carries want around 12 to 14 man

That's who our exchange group are flying with (them going is what's given me the idea). 10man sounds pretty good compared to what teh interwebs have told me: I shall have to look into them.

yeah - if you go i recommend brisbane and the sunshine coast. The gold coast is nice but its basically the vegas of australia. A little further north is Noosa - id recommend going there

You're thinking of California. Australia is for criminals.

Just bear in mind that around that time of year Australia is located about 3 quarters of a mile from the surface of the sun and your weak English temperament to the weather might break your will to live.

PNG air flies to OZ with a stop over in Port Moresby if you don't mind getting raped. But if the Prime Minister needs to fly overseas, they have to use your plane. Otherwise, stop overs can include Singapore, occasionally Seoul, Hong Kong, Guam, etc. I'd keep an eye out for any deals that Jetstar have, sometimes they have really cheap flights direct to Cairns or the Gold Coast (major ports of call for Japanese tourists).

Vegas of Australia my ass, it has one Casino. I'd liken it to Miami if I had to deprecate it by comparing it to a smelly American city. Noosa is for yuppies.

I think you should go to Heard Island.

I have flown them and they are fine - free booze and the planes are ex-qantas fleet. Right now they have return flights in august for 5 man (!)

Re:vegas it has the million tourists, gaudy new money and taste of vegas...

I just want to go back to Sydney, I did a study abroad there in 2004 and have missed it ever since.

Comparing somewhere to Miami isn't going to make me want to go there! Miami was a shit-hole when I visited.

I'm tending towards Sydney for places like the Opera House, mostly because that and the big rock whose name keeps changing are the two iconic "things to see", and saying you went to Australia without seeing at least one of them is like coming to Japan and not going to Tokyo.

Ayers Rock / Uluru! One is colonizing white folk name and the other is Aboriginal name. I went there, it was amazing but ungodly hot.

I also visited Melbourne, Adelaide, Alice Springs (nearest city to Uluru) and the Blue Mountains (prettiness outside Sydney.) All cool, Melbourne is more hip / New York-y but weather isn't as nice. Sydney is gorgeous and paradisiacal. Adelaide is small and cute and near a good wine region.
