Here's a thread for all you newbies who have heard you're coming to Kumamoto!

We're a pretty awesome placement...

Largely because we own the number one prefectural mascot in Japan, Kumamon!

(Warning: You will either love the hell out of this bear and end up stalking him, or be scared that he will devour your brain. Both responses are perfectly normal)

We're also home to the largest active volcano in Japan, the world's largest caldera, beautiful islands, lotus root stuffed with mustard (great for clearing out sinuses), a great mall, and horses you can munch on.

Come in, ask questions, introduce yourself and get to know each other.

(P.s. it will be boiling hot when you arrive so get ready to sweat!)

Kumamoto ROCKS!

And yeah, I've found that about Kumamon too. There's really no in-between.

There really

And from what I've seen it's becoming increasingly difficult to avoid this bear around Japan...friends have seen Kumamon products for sale in Tokyo, I've seen pictures of him harrassing other mascots from all over the place, and I'm always seeing him around Fukuoka.

Not bad for a 1 year old mascot (who also has an office at our prefectural official government buildings <3)

(I'm in love with this derpy bear)

I stand by the belief that he's only popular because he's new. Once he gets older he'll be forgotten with the rest and turn to alcoholism.

I think he already has.

Yep, he already has.

merkypie none of your pictures are working (at least for meeee).

Yup he's now got his own brand of beer out as well. They pretty much put Kumamon on everything and people buy it. I have Kumamon toilet paper and I picked a Kumamon eggplant even though the non-branded ones were a little cheaper. Damnit you foul vixen of a bear

I did the same thing with tofu!! Sonnuvabitch!

He is starting to get a BIT oversaturated though, I think. He's on everything from my JTE's worksheets to beer to veggies to candy.

I remember when nobody liked you, Kumamon. Don't sell out so soon, man!

Cytrix, :o weird. They're tumblr links. Oh well, I'll try imgur :)

Kumamon's gone hollywood~

I think it was because I was on my school comp and tumblr is a no-no there (which is probably a good thing since I'd waste all my time on there, and here is bad enough)

It's because he's used to advertise the new Shinkansen line. The only thing they love more than trains here are CM's.

Kumamon is in both.

Also Kumamoto is super awesome (and super conservative). I think it's a little early for placement threads yo!

May 10th, 2012, 19:05
Yeah all these placement threads being bumped = me go crazy.

The earliest I could imagine getting information would be a week, more likely two based on previous years/ what my consulate said. That's a week or two of going crazy...

Hopefully Melbourne isn't delayed this time... considering our coordinator said she'd call with placement information rather than mail it should be fine, though.

Hey Aussies, I've heard that my BOE requested people from "Down South" to my area. Just a heads up :)

My city is slowly shifting from mostly American ALTs to a nice hodgepodge. I'm excited to see it change!

I know we're getting another Kiwi girl in Bear-central!

One of my very good friends has been placed in Amakusa City. Take care of him, all you Kumamoners!

May 24th, 2012, 19:31
Amakusa is sweet! Lucky friend.

May 25th, 2012, 08:35
Yeah there are some awesome people down in Amakusa and it's easily the most beautiful part of our prefecture. I try to go down once a month for epic drinking/bad movie/game marathons with my friends down there. Plus the humidity is a littttleee lower than the mainland since they get a nice sea breeze

Yeah, I'm on my way out (fifth year) but I hope to go down to visit him in Amakusa and our other very good friend in Tamana before I depart. Seems like you guys have a good group over there.
