Anyone hoping to be placed for the fall 2014 slots?

I'll be attending the NY/NJ seminar and am curious as to what everyone else heard.

I spoke with Jason who said that there were only a few slots left for fall 2014 and that a lot of us may be asked to be open for spring 2015 slots. I was really hoping for fall 2014.

I'm applying for an august placement and have an interview booked for early April in London. The seminar/interview sounds even more harrowing than JET... actually came here looking for some tips.

i wish you luck itsmalicali!

I have one on Tuesday in York (England haha)!

I don't know if I'm gonna have much chance of getting a place though, the woman on the phone interview told me almost all their Fall positions require driving (never gone near the driver's seat of a car in my life) and that my graduation might be a little too late to get the visa. Actually, I was pretty surprised that I even got through to the seminar stage, so I guess they must have SOME non-driving positions....

(She did ask me if I could ride a bike so I don't know if they envisage me biking long distances to work every day hahaha)

I have a seminar/interview on 11th April in London. I'm also waiting to hear my JET result so I'm really hoping I find out before the Interac interview... Although there are only like 140 places on JET for UK candidates so I'm kinda just assuming I've been rejected!

I did all my interviewing at the end of last year (Australian applicant, so no seminar), and they set me to "recommended", which I understand is basically "we want you unless your police check shows anything bad". I've sent them all my documents, which they're now processing (my online dashboard says they've been sent off to Immigration for a CoE application). All our previous communications have been about me departing for fall 2014, or potentially earlier. Do you think I'm all good? I don't want to wait until spring.

Didn't get a JET interview offer; discussed in another thread.

Cheers,
Franklint

I think so! Just act fast and send in your application ASAP.

And you can also try eikaiwas like ECC and AEON who are recruiting now.

Oh yeah, that. Lol. Well there is a shop by mine that does passport photos manually, like the guy takes a photo of you then prints it. So we spent ages printing out different pictures and measuring the size of my head until we found one that was vaguely okay. I sent them in but I didn't get a response if they were okay cos the woman who deals with them is apparently on holiday.

I dunno where you live but I was told you can get them from here: Snappy Snaps: Photo and Digital Specialists (http://www.snappysnaps.co.uk)

Your own house. Seriously. Find a room with a white wall, ask a friend to take them, then upload them on the PC and adjust the size. That's what I did, and it's the picture they ended up using on my gaijin card.

Someone I know who applied to Interac after being told they were an alternate already had their phone interview. They applied late last week, got the phone call to schedule the interview the next day, and had the interview yesterday. Less than a week and they already know that they have an in person interview to go to.

Also. Excuse all the "they" I used. Trying to keep their identity as ambiguous as possible.

One thing I will say about my seminar day is that you should try and come across well at all times, because by the time you get to the one-on-one interview it's little more than a formality and mine consisted of about like two questions haha. Also, we didn't really get a lunch break or anything so either eat a load beforehand or take some small snacks in your bag! (you do get a 5 minute break here and there) Good luck!

Hopefully! If I may ask, what do you plan on doing if you don't get into Interac? Do you reckon it's much easier to get into than JET?

Jamie Solo
April 14th, 2014, 04:15
In terms of being easier, I have no idea. I'd like to say yes though =P

And if it doesn't work out, I'm gonna find a job in the UK after I finish my postgrad, do a TEFL course and try to go abroad to Japan over the summer. Then re-apply for both Interac and JET.

I have no desire to work those crappy eikaiwa hours and I'm not in a particular rush to start my actual career in the UK either so I have time! What about you?

After I got alternate'd, I sent in an application. Glad I'm not the only person that hasn't heard back yet, but it makes sense that they would be inundated with apps right about now.

For reference I put in for overseas/Skype interview in SK not a regular seminar session. Not sure what that will change however.

That's cool, I'm not too sure what I'm gonna do! I'd like to do a postgrad in a year or two, but I'd like to go to Japan or somewhere else and work for a while before that.

I just started working for Interac and I honestly love it. And after going through the application myself and seeing people do it after me, I will say when you apply seems to matter a lot because they do seem want people there for a whole year and it's better to start at the beginning. Ideally, applying in the fall is best because there are just fewer slots available during other points in the year.

I'm sure the company is rather busy now as school just started here. I'm not sure how they divide up their work by any means but I feel like this is a particularly busy time for them so it may be accounting for their delayed response.

If you have any questions about the company, let me know and I will be more than happy to share my experience.

This may sound really rude, (or it may just be me, being British and all), but what is the salary for Interac? I know its less than JET'S £21k, but i can't find it anywhere on their site.

I'm just waiting to hear back now as all my data has gone on to Tokyo now.

Yeeeeah, not really doable with interac. Especially given how they cut the salary down for 4 months of the contract, you''ll be lucky if you break even with your start up cost (I didn't).

Yeah, i just re-checked my figures and realised that there is about a 2/3k in difference between the two in current exchange rates...

Me too, pal. The way interac treats people, it's more for fresh college grads with no responsibilities. I had intended to send my mother some cash for my own student loans, but that just wasn't possible (on the 60% month I actually had to ask her for some cash to eat with).

According to your system of schooling, I am a fresh college grad, however i was told that i was born old, so most don't consider me in that category. How quickly did you hear back after they had sent your vid/application to Tokyo?

Oh, for people still applying, the next stage after the phone interview is a demo lesson (which is videoed) and a one to one interview and a grammar test. However, unlike the grammar test for JET, its longer (2 full pages) but you have no time limit.

Ummm I can't remember the salary at the moment because it also depends from person to person.

But I don't entirely agree with your statement about recent grads with no responsibilities. I saved up the 5k to come here after graduating in May and paid for my plane ticket as well. I have over $320 a month to pay back in loans and according to my calculations, I should be able to pay that every month as well as rent, health insurance, etc. I am financially independent here at least at the moment although you mentioned the decreased payment months and I haven't experienced that yet. Loans may be difficult then but I can decrease my payments temporarily. But of course this depends on your lifestyle and expenses which is never the same for everyone. I spoke to an interac employee who said he traveled a lot on this salary but I don't know his financial situation.

However I think that because of those months, the job is almost better suited for people who aren't recent grads who may have more money saved. Additionally, many people also pick up tutoring hours outside of work for extra money.

Also I think I heard back from Interac in December and my demo thing was in November.

There may be delays on both ends as we are fast approaching Easter, and Japan is fast approaching Golden Week, so its could take a little longer. I'm not one for parties and extravagant spending (in fact i'm a bit of a scrounger). How easy is it to pick up the extra tutoring? Do the students approach you?
As for the savings, i currently have £2.5k saved, planning on at least making that to £3k by the time i leave, hopefully £3.5k.

Don't remember, that was over a year and a half ago. But I wouldn't freak over the grammar test, it was an A4 paper folded in half. So yes, "four pages" but nothing intense.

Did you just come over in March? Then you won't be getting a full paycheck until the end of June. The one you get in May will be short and they will still take rent and car from it. It won't be as bad as the check you'll receive at the end of September, so I suggest stocking up on cup ramen now.

For the record, I didn't drink or do much traveling but I had trouble saving anything meaningful. Luckily my school didn't need me to prepare materials or that would have hurt too. There are a lot of hidden expenses they don't tell you about (like the all but mandatory enkai for instance), and they didn't raise the salary despite sales tax going up 3%. Sure, you can probably save enough for your loans, just stay in your apartment a lot.

Ah yeah so true on that too with the holidays.
I kept being like "oh my god did i really spend THAT MUCH MONEY?" but it was because it all went to the initial apartment payment hahah. Now that I'm working, I have less free time to go out and buy things to entertain myself so I think I'll be spending less now.

I only started teaching this week so I haven't even had a chance to look for tutoring yet. But people I have spoken to have just had other people, maybe coworkers or friends in Japan, contact them being like "oh my friend wants to learn English etc etc". I was thinking about making some kind of flyer and putting it up with my email address. If I figure something out, I'll let you all know how I managed it.

Yeah it's kind of a pain now but I've been pretty ok at holding off on buying things I don't actually need. I also just got a flip phone instead of a smartphone which saves me sooooo much money as my bill is only like 3,000 yen a month compared to 8,000. I got a wireless router for my apartment so i can still use iMessage on my American iPhone when I'm home + I may buy a sim card for when I travel and need a digital map.

Ahhh the enkai! I have 4 schools so I hope it's not super heavy on that. I want to go to a few of course, but going to every one for 4 schools would be a lot. I haven't gotten any invitations yet though. And yes to supplies the 500 yen a month stipend is basically nothing, but it seems like the 2 schools I worked at so far are very generous with the copier and printer + other supplies which is so helpful.

I told them I don't do the cold either and the woman at my seminar said that it was a good thing to mention that. I am placed in Odawara which is like 2 hours south of Tokyo and 1 hour south of Yokohama. I wanted Kanto area close to Tokyo because I'm into the art and fashion there. I could have been placed closer, but it's nice here and it's probably better I'm not tempted to travel to Tokyo during the week anyway.

Got an e-mail about a phone interview today. Found it odd that the e-mail said that anyone starting in August is only contracted until the end of the school year in March. But I guess a lot of people break contract in the summer for jobs and stuff so they still need a decent intake.

Ah well. Guess its time to 'prepare' for the phone interview.

Lol no mine was really weird actually. She mostly wanted to confirm technical details like can I drive, when am I graduating, am I a picky eater..

Then she asked some super basic questions like what do you think are the qualities needed for teaching, why do you want to teach in Japan. I just prepared some answers for questions like that and more or less read it off.

I was actually surprised I passed that stage though cos she seemed really negative about the fact I can't drive and that my graduation was in July, but anyway I got an email inviting me to a seminar almost straight after.

JET are happy with my statement of results and letter from my uni confirming that im going to graduate. Interac are contacting my graduation dept to get all the info, as my uni are used to employers wanting it early... you would think that they would just move graduation earlier wouldn't you...

Franklin! I remember seeing you over on my Australian JETs thread.

Good news, I was also offered a contract last Friday for the late June/early July. Accepted it today and just need to send the paperwork. Keep me posted on your placement.

In the UK, how long does it take to get a response from Tokyo? I had my interview on 11th of April, my lecturers told me last week that they had been approached for references which they provided, so im just waiting for confirmation. Anyone know an eta for me?

From Australia, but I was told to let my references know to respond within a week to expedite the process; one of my references e-mailed Tokyo Head Office before I could inform her that they've sent the e-mail to them. I was e-mailed my offer of employment 3 days later.
It seems it usually takes a week. I'll guess that you'll get it next week sometime considering the Golden Week holidays

I accepted my offer of employment last week from Interac for either June or August departure. Anyone else heading out from Canada this year?

My phone interview is on Saturday, does anyone know how the process works? Do I just wait for them to call me or what? Sorry if that's a stupid question but I've never done a phone interview before.
Also, does anyone know when they contact the references? I didn't actually tell my references that I put them down, as they agreed to do it for JET I figured it would be okay, but now I'm thinking I ought to drop them an e-mail.

They will call you. If they don't within
30 minutes or so you could try shooting them a call.

My references still haven't been contacted. I had my phone interview about 2 weeks ago. Definitely let your references know you want them to be a reference.

Thanks. So you reckon it's pretty likely my references won't have been contacted yet?

I had my physical interview on the 11th of April. They contacted my references two weeks after that. I'm still waiting for my confirmation email.... I'm FED UP of waiting!

Some show up to the in-person interview with references outstanding. The phone interview isn't as big a deal as some people make it.

Just wanted to make sure I'm not asking permission for references from people who've already been contacted, that would be kind of awkward! Should've asked beforehand of course, but I was in a rush to complete the application.

Ok, its taken them a month to contact me asking me to re-upload my driving licence! And then they are going to send my info to Tokyo... I thought Interac was supposed to be quicker!

Ha, just wait until you get the job. They waited so long to send my letter of release that I had to haul ass to Mito after noon the day my visa expired. The clerk even did the stereotypical "look at the watch" gesture.

How long did it take for people to hear back from them after the phone interview? It's been a while now and no response...

I heard back today and had the phone interview on Saturday like you did. You should hear back soon.

Edit: Does anyone know what time the assessment day starts? Trying to pick the best date for travel.

About 2/3 weeks. But remember, they are going to be getting lots of apps at the mo which might slow things down

Still didn't hear anything back from them, don't really see what I could've done wrong in the phone interview as it was pretty routine. I guess I ought to start making other plans!

I would be tempted to email them and ask politely for a response either way, at least it stops you worrying/waiting!

Emails get lost all the time if the employers don't want you. It's annoying but true. You'll have better luck getting a direct answer if you call the Interac branch that interviewed you, rather than take the chance that the guy or gal who gets your email will actually ever respond to it. That's my opinion anyways. Do what you want.

I only had the phone interview with Maria (the UK coordinator), and she's the only person I've corresponded with. I guess I'm a bit surprised, as we were speaking about the in-person interview on the phone, and she told me I could expect a reply in the next few days.

Yeah. So give them a call during business hours. That way you definitely get an answer rather than risk not getting an email reply.

Turns out I've got a seminar/interview after all. What did everyone do for the warmup in the demo lesson? Sort of desperate not to have to sing, but it seems "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" is the done thing.

Yeah, i did HSNT, have you watched the sample video that they sent you?

Yeah, the sample video involved a song about numbers, but I figured we're not supposed to copy it completely. Think I might just have to suck it up and do Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes even though singing in front of a camera is basically my worst nightmare! I know it's extremely unoriginal, but do you think they care?

Its the same thing that i did, they then offered me the job. Then two weeks after that they asked me to re-do the video anyways, so i get the feeling that its not that important...

Maybe this might ease your mind a bit. My recruiter told us during the seminar that it's really not about being original, but it's more about how you are able to follow instructions.

There were 8 people in my seminar, and I personally noticed that the people who just copied the sample video activities were more confident in the way they presented themselves and stumbled less. Not to mention they were more likely to finish the demo within the time frame limit of 6 minutes. I had someone in my group who decided to alter the Shopping dialogue completely with new vocabulary, which seemed like a good idea - but the person wasted so much time trying to get us (who acted as participating students) to repeat the new dialogue and guess her new vocab words that it was cut short.

My advice is to just follow the sample video, but add a bit of your own personality and flair to it. Also if you are going to have audiences, try to predict how your mock students will respond to your activities. And don't be afraid to make mistakes! Long story short, everything that could possibly go wrong in my video DID go wrong. Just find humour in your own mistakes and keep going!

I made up my own song, but copying it will be fine. If you make it to "training", they're going to want you to copy their demonstrations verbatim anyway. Blame their trainers, but individuality was basically stamped out in favor of copying their demos. But it doesn't matter if you're JHS because you will literally not use any of it.
