Just went to go check the official forums... All that's there right now is the Teaching Materials Exchange Forum. I suppose this has been a long time coming.

EDIT: Seems there's an announcement and it's already been spotted by ITILers.

Too many workplace complaint threads (a la Hokkaido is a pit) or I'm having problems and no listens to me (the stalker thread.) Teaching materials exchange was pretty much stalled.

The only reason I went there any more is because I was too lazy to make new English boards myself, so I shamelessly stole ideas from the English board photo thread...

I think so too. I know we're all pessimistic assholes on this board but is anyone else thinking we should try and spread this around the interwebs? Given that the OP in that thread has decided to go home, it can't really hurt him, and if there's a chance it ends up on 2chan or any news site it might end up coming back to bite those fuckers in the ass.

Exactly. That was a serious issue, which lead to the discussion of more serious issues that have been had with that BoE, and I think JETs and prospective JETs have a right to know these things about the job.

Haha. Well, if you want to preserve the all is well and rosy sanitised version of JET, sure Official isn't great for that. If you want to provide help and support for JETs, then I see no reson to shut them down, especially since the forums were made visible to only registered users.

But anyone could register. There was no filter; no way to ensure that only JETs signed up.

Also, there are--ostensibly--preexisting structures in place geared toward providing help and support for JETs. These existed long before the forums existed, and continue to exist now that the forums are shut down. Realistically, these structures are probably more practical and effective than the forums, anyway.

If you want to provide help and support for JETs,
local PAs, AJET and BOEs are all the help and support a normal and rational person needs. Seriously, JET has TOO MUCH help and support. With a national forum the only thing that can happen is a bunch of ESID and "advice" from either a PHD in Linguistics, or Lianwen.

I agree with Word, what point did the forum really serve from Clair's viewpoint? I don't think the forum furthers CLAIR's goals at all. It is just one more little headache for them to worry about. Why keep it active for the 20 odd regular posters so they can bitch and complain about their CO's?

Becky's also right, there is ample support out there already. I would say that Facebook itself has almost rendered the forum kind of useless.

In my prefecture, most of the JETs are pretty active on our local AJET Facebook page, and they can offer way more relevant support than what I found on the official forum.

I do like hearing from ALT's from across the country, but ITIL does a good job of that.

I think after last year's Google groups fiasco the writing was on the wall. JET Yahoo groups got cut off in the middle of the shortlisting/placement period and everything moved to different forums - there were a few private sub-reddits and a bunch of closed and open Facebook groups that sprang up. It was easier for the Facebook groups to maintain order (no anonymity in closed groups) - and weed out the really unreasonably nervous folks (like a 200 comment post about some people freaking out about mukade.) Moreover, it isn't publicly accessible, so less chance of it showing up on blogs or 2chan.

1. I'm enough of a conspiracy theorist to call the Hokkaido BOE thread the tipping point on this.

I mean seriously, what would you do (as the boss) if you had a forum where literally the only active thread was your workers talking about how they'd been maimed and injured in the line of work, and you were fucking them/legally shady? Delete the thread and watch as an "OMG CENSORSHIP, THEY DON'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW HOW IT IS!" thread pops up every day? Or just delete the whole forum with no explanation so that no one can pin it on the one thread?

2. The point the forum served: making sure that ITIL wasn't the first thing to come up when you google "JET forums." That can't POSSIBLY be better for them. They just gave up control 100% and I bet they'll regret it.

I just sent this email to Clair_PC

*****************************************************************

Hi Clair_PC,

I know it probably makes very little difference to any decisions made in regards to the future of these forums, yet despite however little my lone voice may be in the grand scheme of things, I would feel like I had done nothing if this wonderful resource were to be closed down without expressing my feelings on the matter.

When I first heard about the JET programme I was coming to the end of my time in University in the UK and it sounded like something I would have been really interested in exploring and having a go at. I really wanted to know more about the details of JET and about the only place I could find anything of use to inform me of the exchange was here, within the archives of this once bustling and vibrant website, which has so sadly been slowly and increasingly silenced over the last few months.

While I know there were many areas where people responsible for the organization of the JET programme on an official capacity would have disliked about this website (and I really do feel for the people in charge of moderation through all of these years) - on the whole, I believe this has always been a well respected and invaluable resource for people interested in finding out more about life as a JET and have unaccountably contributed to the prosperity and growth of the programme.

As a third year ALT going into my fourth and holding a passionate dream to stay in Japan for the long term future even after my life as a JET participant is over I know that I owe my current situation to the advice I received on this website a handful of years ago. I feel that I have made a positive impact within my community and have formed an ever growing relationship between my co-workers and students bridging the gap between the UK and Japan. I firmly believe, if this resource had never been available to me at the time (as it is currently unavailable to prospective and potentially brilliant candidates) then I would never have made it this far and the people I have been able to connect with would know nothing of my life, character, passion or love for teaching, or all of the times I have been able to share views on international topics or issues of conversation.

Essentially, it is my feeling that by silencing this platform for discussion, the affluence and prosperity of the JET programme and experience as a whole has been somewhat dampened.

Of course the power lays with people above to decide the fate of this platform, but as stated in the beginning, I would be saddened to see it disappear knowing I had done nothing to contribute to its potential revival.

Yours humbly,
The small voice of an ALT.
