I may be offered a job in Sendai. I'd love some information from people living in the city and the region. I've googled about it, but nothing beats insider advice.

Exactly the same as every other Japanese city with around 1-2 million people living in it. Has everything you need, quite geographically isolated though.

Sendai is about a 2 hour train ride from Tokyo. There are a fair amount of foreigners studying and working as ALTs in the city. Miyagi is beautiful, there will be lots to do and see.

Sendai is the best city in Japan. Not isolated. 90 minutes from Ueno Station by shinkanesen. 7500 yen flights to Osaka on Peach (1 hour).

so its best quality is its easy to go somewhere else? Hardly a ringing endorsement.

I thought that was the whole point of Japan though, to get here and go somewhere else?

Sendai

Good - has both an apple store and a disney store.

Bad - Tohoku women are fatter than their Kanto counterparts.

Sendai has craft beer... I really don't pay attention to anything other than that when judging a city.

Just a pack's worth on top of the cake. Then he put them out on my neck, as is our family custom.

Oh no, that appendage was occupied. Why do you think his neck was in easy reach?

Back on topic... Sendai is a decent city - just like pretty much every other large city in Japan, except its a bit far north for people not used to cool winters. It doesn't get that much snow compared to cities further west or east. Fair warning for this info, I don't live in Sendai, but I visit friends in/near Sendai fairly often. Sendai city is separate from the rest of Miyagi in terms of JET - its a designated city, so its under, but separate.

I do know that they just opened a new subway line (two subway lines now.) The subways are the most expensive in Japan, but there's also JR surface rail as well, and a lot of buses. It's well connected to the rest of the country via Shink and plane.

There's a bunch of festivals I've gone to, like the Jazz Festival in the fall, Yosakoi, and Classical music festivals. The Tanabata season is pretty good, too. There's easy access to several ski areas in the local mountains if winter sports are your thing.

Shopping is fine - there's a Yodobashi, Labi, and some smaller electronics stores, but it's not very large/impressive compared to every other Bic/Yodobashi/small electronics districts I've been to.

There's a good variety of restaurants - same as you'd fine in any medium/large Japanese city. Local specialties are beef tongue (pretty good) and sasakamaboko (bamboo leaf shaped fish cakes) and Sendai beef (local wa-gyuu.)

I remember in the good ol days before this place got all topsy-turvy there were people here would actually pick up bits of unrelated thread and put them elsewhere.

From the videos I've seen on the internetz, I'd say Sendai is close to the ocean.
Like really close.

Any current Sendai residents or, even better, current JETs in Sendai willing to drop me a line via PM? I have a few questions I would really appreciate any advice you may have on!
