I'm in a casual JET group chat and quite a few of them are all suddenly panicking about "inhabitants/residents tax" and throwing random numbers around ranging from 4 man to 30 man?

Please, o' senpais of ITIL, shed some truth on the matter~ Your words I will believe!

You have to pay residence tax to reside somewhere. It differs based on where you reside.

There's a lump sum and also an option to pay it in installments. That could be a reason people are confused.

If you're american, you don't need to pay anything for two years, if you filed the right paperwork.

It will vary depending on income as well. noobs pay less than old fogies.

The lowest I've heard for a full year is 100000, the highest was like 300000.

Do people on the new contract still get reimbursed for it?

EDIT: Oops, missed some zeroes

I don't think so.

Thankfully, my town still compensates me for it. They threw it in last year as a bonus to make staying another year more attractive, as it wasn't listed in my older contracts at all.

I don't think so.

And the total take-home salary sinks even lower.

It's usually my summer bonus (and like most things in Japan, it's based on your income for the previous fiscal year hence why it will be quite low for first year JETs)

Yeah first year it was around 16,000 I think. This year it's going to be about 170,000.

Only suckers pay residence tax.

How do you get around it? Walk into the tax office humming God Save the Queen, slap the counter assistant with your dick, then walk out?

Ya, my residence tax is 14000 a month, which was being paid for by my employer.

Keep in mind you are responsible for paying for your residence tax before you screw off from Japan as well. Many people around me have learned this one the hard way when they had a 2k bill as they were leaving.

Ya. But it seems to have become worse since the contract change.

From what I remember, my school paid it for me. I don't think I had anything extra coming out of my pay to cover it.....
I know this is a few years out of date, but between 2004 and 2009 JET pay was Y300,000/month. I got Y264,000/month in my bank account. I honestly can't remember what the Y36,000 was for - tax?

Hers will increase again. Each step above poverty you guys take will be more money out of pocket.

Just count yourself lucky it seems like it will always be pretty low.
