Hey everyone,

I applied with Interac and I am starting to raise my start up funds.

Any interesting ways that you guys got the 500000 yen to start?

You need 50man to start up? Seriously?

That is what they suggest. That does not cover airfair of course.

Its steep. ($5000 in USD) Still I would rather have too much at the on set than not enough.

Who would win twenty goodmen, da fakken legend, 10,000 unsullied, or ten guys wearing masks and loincloths?

Ramsay, but only if he has his shirt off.

I'm not familiar with how much Interac do to help you find housing, but if they do (including paying the key money/deposit, etc) as in, you literally just move into an apartment/house that's ready for you, you will NOT need 5000 USD, wth? Have they justified why you might be spending 500,000 yen in one month?

They only help you find the apartment and be a guarantor. The rest (first two months rent, key money, deposit, etc...)is all on you up front. On top of that, you are not paid until the end of your second month. That was their justification.

Hmmm... Then I guess you will need to take more than normal. How much do you have saved? Are you currently working?

I am a Substitute Teacher making less than half what I will be making in Japan. I only interviewed this last weekend but have several people already pledging to donate some cash for my start up.
I am selling t-shirts with some cool japanese designs on them to fund raise.

Even in JET y'all had to raise funds right?

If all else fails, do you have a credit card? Put a lot on your card now, pay it back once on that lucrative Interac payroll.

I know how much Interac drones make. I chose my words intentionally.

Fixing it would have involved the term "slave wages".

By the time you save 5000, you could just come here on a 1 month vacation (assuming you do the typical ALT hostel stays) and not worry about the work thing.

if you aren't getting paid for 2 months then 50man including key money and deposits, 2 months rent, 2 months utilities, startup costs blah blah blah then 50man sounds like the minimum you should be bringing. JETs normally only have to wait 3 weeks before their first pay cheque. To be honest your current job sounds ghastly. You'll probably make more cash ditching the sub teaching malarky and do some casual laboring or a retail gig.

Or teach somewhere other than Japan. The market for english teachers is shit here.

Some people did, some people didn't (me) and some people came over close to broke and miraculously survived until their first paycheck. ESID and all that.

My Grandmother sent me a $500 birthday check. She also the family member most opposed to my going to Japan. Yeah, I promise I'll use it on... shoes.

My Grandmother ... the family member most opposed to my going to Japan.

Same here... showing her how to video call seems to be helping though.
...just hope that I haven't started something I'll later regret.

we're all pretty glad that Bernie uses Facebook/email. Although I like to imagine from time to time that he has somebody else log on/set up everything, so that he can just type in one of his speeches.

one a side note, my MOM doesn't know how to use email, but that's a special case. I had to give her a 30 min. lecture on how to use her TV netflix, standing in front of the screen like the Jeopardy girl.
