View Full Version : The Somewhat Late 2017 Placements Thread

Hey Folks! Long time no see. I realized no one ever got a 2017 placements thread going (I guess most folks just stuck to the reddit one?) but for all 10 of us that prefer old school forums...

So I ended up placed in Akkeshi-cho, Hokkaido. I'm stoked on Hokkaido, mixed feelings about being so far out from the "big city." It also doesn't help that the only JET blog I can really find from Akkeshi is uh... something.

Kabukimono Kowboy: 2014 Year Review (Ambition Rising) | The Kabukimono Kowboy Khronicals (https://mikeviscusi1991.wordpress.com/2014/12/21/kabukimono-kowboy-2014-year-review-ambition-rising/)

Anyway, where'd y'all end up?

That blog is gold. Since that seems to be his last post, I assume Chiba did not go well for him either.

does it go well for anyone who leaves JET for an eikaiwa job?

Well, no. But I like how sure he seems to be that the problem is with every other person in the town and his former JETs, not with him.

That he was told by his japanese teacher to give up is also brilliant.

I kind of sympathized with him until the last part.

Why does this town keep signing up for more JETs?

Jiggit

Isn't the answer (for all towns) that the government makes them?

I mean I would think having the outgoing JET trash your town on the way out would give them enough reason to stop.

probably more to do with a lack of alternatives due the location. If there were multiple dispatch companies knocking on their door every year they may be tempted to switch.

I guess if the past 3 ALTs all did something unspeakable and before that you had a plague of Russian viking LARPers you might just not care anymore.

Well that was quite the read...

I found him, though. He's teaching Japanese with his N3 certificate in Ohio. So...Chiba probably didn't go very well.

PS, here's his new blog in case you want to continue the insanity trip:

What was this thread about again?

What was this thread about again?

Distracting ourselves from the sad fact that only one person from this year's intake bothered sticking around and ITIL is dead man walking.

I love how that blogger thinks he "literally beat out tens of thousands of people" for one of only a few positions.

The odds of application success on JET are much higher than any other job we'll ever apply to.

O and OP I think you are fine as long as you don't say you are part Russian when the whole town grills you on your ancestry. 100% sure this guy made all this crap up after reading through a few more of his blogs. He is extremely delusional.

It's utterly astonishing how a supposedly "prestigious" and "highly competitive" endeavour like JET can choose so many people with obvious personality disorders.

Seriously tho, anyone who wants to come here is damaged goods in some way or another.

I ended up in Aomori! The closest city is 40 minutes by car but I'm happy with my placement. I couldn't find any blogs but at least my predecessor has been really nice.

I'm reading through that blog you found now...oh dear haha

Yeah but come on, our fear of the adult world and minor issues with self-loathing wouldn't be a drop in the ocean for this guy.

PS - OP, please stick around and provide more reading material like that. Quite possibly the greatest car-crash JET blog ever.

I like Aomori... Not sure if I'd want to live there. But it's nice to visit.

Glad y'all got a kick out of it. I'm not too concerned either, I'll just have to paper-bag the vodka while drinking outside I guess.

Oh man there's a follow-up blog too?! I know what I'm reading tonight. Maybe that's what I'll do until I leave, try to find the most disastrous JET blogs and compile them into a book.

Honestly with the bar set so high I'm not even sure what to do? Do I just torch the whole damn eastern seaboard of Hokkaido on my way out?

Honestly while I'm sure this guy was a loony, unless he's totally making things up this might well be a dud placement. There are a fair few stories of Hokkaido BoEs being shady as well.

I guess keep an open mind and do your best but if they turn out to be tits then don't feel bad about taking a new job in a place you actually want to live in. There's nothing wrong with using JET "just to get a visa". I don't understand how employers that treat you as a disposable tool are surprised when you turn around and treat them the same way.

Honestly his relating of a ps3 samurai game to his own life got me real good.

"the story that I really liked the most was surprisingly Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s...Of course, Hideyoshi also did a lot of stupid things as well..."
He came so close to self-awareness. SO CLOSE.
