I was just wondering if anyone knows how much an applicant's GPA is taken into consideration when applying?

as many applicants don't have a GPA, it's not taken into consideration much. As far as I'm aware the fact that is important is you have a degree, not the level at which you have it. because you need a degree to get a visa.

American system of awarding grades, it means grade point average unless i'm much mistaken. a high one would be like a first for us.

Stands for Grade Point Average. A numerical point is assigned to the Alphameric grade then multiplied by the credits for the course added together and divided by the total credits attempted.
4.0=A
3.0=B
2.0=C
1.0=D
0.0=F

Having a degree is the only requirement. I guess an extremely high or low GPA might be commented on in your interview, but wouldn't be a make or break factor.
