In the words of Douglas Bell from the Chicago JET Desk:

"3 years is the norm. 5 years is possible for selected prefectural
advisor and elementary school ALT positions."

Some more on this topic.
In the words of Tracie from the KC JET desk:

"Yes it is true that SOME JETs will be offered a 4th and 5th year on the program as either an elementary school ALT or a prefectural advisor IF:
1) there is a position open in their prefecture
2) the JET has a good work record"

yeah, my pred just got offered a 4th year position and was telling me a little about it. there is a lot of real teaching involved in what he will be doing. that's exciting, though, isn't it? to maybe be there for more than 3 years?
