The yen just today has gone from 120 to 118 to the dollar, and they say it is likely to continue in that direction. I hope it can wait until after April.

yeah, was looking at that after I read about the stockmarket drops - It'd be nice for the yen to hold steady until after I get over there... then it can drop like a stone.

233 yen to the pound today! i wish the pound would crumble and fall so i at least have some chance of paying back a good portion of my student loan while im here!

A few weeks ago, the pound was worth 251 yen -soooooo ridiculous!! making the 2 pound coin a higher valued coin than the 500 yen which is the highest valued coin in circulation! woot to the yen getting stronger! xx

I don't think hoping the yen gets weaker is a very popular view round here sunshine.

You will think the same if and when you get here.

Who are you talking to?

Some of you are using the wrong econ terms.
The Yen is not getting weaker, it is getting stronger, 1000 yen can buy more dollars today than it could a few days ago, that means stronger. It is the dollar that is getting weaker compared to the yen.

In 04 or 05 it was around 100 to 105 to the dollar for a while, which sucked becuase I was there studying and not making money over there.

The big killer is when it comes to pension refund time, especially if you are a 3rd year. You are exchanging around 770,000 yen to dollars or pounds and the exchange rate can make you lose shit loads of your home currency.

Too true man...Im concerned about this as well...but there isnt much i can do about when that money will get to me...ill just have to hope we have a favorable rate then...

Down to 117 today, why can't it just stay for a few more weeks, just until I get to Japan then it go as low as it wants.

Chef- if your sure your coming to Japan as a JET, why don't you buy your yen now? Then you'll get a better rate, and if for some reason you wern't chosen as a JET you could sell them back and make a profit...

(This is assuming the yen/doller rate keeps moving in the same direction)

I was thinking about doing that, even if the people in Tokyo have a serious lapse in judgment and don't pick me, I am going to Japan in April to visit friends.

My folks are coming in April too. A few weeks back they wired me a huge amount of money - it became even bigger becasue they had assumed 200 yen / 1 GBP (+ a bit extra) but the rate was actually 240/1! Now its going the other way...

I'm wishing that the the yen gets stronger. I'm leaving this year so when i get my final salary, money back from apt, pension money and the yen is weak, then ive lost a lot, a lot of money

I'm quite happy for the yen to do what ever you want against the sterling,

but I want the yen vs NZD to be 60/1 and I'll be very happy

With this exchange rate its a very good time to come to Japan!!!

They say that the Yen is the most undervalued currency in the world at the moment (except for maybe the Chinese Yuan) so whatever savings we can bring across now will end up being worth a hell of a lot more when we come back home. The Yen's weakness is mostly due to currency speculation (and interest rates) which run in cycles, so us 2007 JETs are quite likely to short the market by coming around when we do! Yeehaww!!!!
