... Because I`ve just been offered a job teaching at a British University!! (long story, but this means I can work at a Japanese uni too) ... yay! ...

So ...don`t worry people! ... if you don`t get JET it really isn`t a big deal, better things can come up - try doing a TEFL, or go to Japan with one of the `big four` (er... not NOVA...)

Anyways, thanks to those of you who gave me advice and I wish all of you the best of luck - I`m off!!

Poor bugger, you do realise that means you have to live in Britain?

Maybe among the "big four" you should avoid NOVA. They may be scaling back a tad.

The Nova guy who lives in my town (just under a half hour from where he works) got his place of residence transferred by Nova. He was forced to move further away and as of this week has to travel an hour to and from work everyday.

haha ... yeah, good point but It's good pay - I'm going on holiday to Japan in summer (whole summer off! oh yeah!) and again for New Years. Also, it means I can go off and teach in Japanese uni's in a year or two because I'm actually teaching Japanese students who come here for a year from a uni in chiba, so ...even though I'd rather be in Japan I think it's worth it.

Drink some sake for me while you're there though, will you? :D

I think that's an awesome opportunity, congrats! And it also sounds awesome that you'll have a chance to go teach in Japanese univerisities. It's not the same as JET, but in some ways it's probably better.

Hey, it could have applied to you. We're not here to force boundaries on you.

good point, psychohistoric ... I think it's a reflex because people keep thinking I'm a guy! ... I think my huge 'Okinawa' Kanji picture might be a bit too masculine and ...er ... man... ish.

Not getting in seemed horrible to me at first because I have wanted to participate in JET since I heard about it two years ago. Now I am moving on to my Plan B, which is moving to Chicago this summer and getting a teaching job there. Then I am going to apply to JET again. I am hoping that having some experience will help me out...who knows?

Nice Kabukicho... you will likely find that position a good deal more fulfilling than JET, if possibly less interesting, but the whole summer off.. damn!

Er, congrats and all, but not getting into JET and getting this job really have no correlation...really a bizarre way to think about it!

well ... If I'd got JET I would have had to turn this job down OR I wouldn't have even applied for it. It's good pay and means that after a year I can carry on having a career in Japan at university status - of course I would like to do JET but in the long term I really think this is the best path for me. I'll be teaching Japanese students (albeit in the UK) and still be able to travel around Europe and Asia!

Thanks Dynamis, I'm still a little bummed about JET but I'm hoping it *will* be more fulfilling working at the uni ... and the summer? tell me about it! I'm going to Tokyo-Okinawa for the WHOLE summer with my okinawan Boyfriend :D ... Are you on Jet? don't you guys get the whole summer off...?

I know exactly how you felt so I really, really wish you the best of luck with this Jennfizz ...I got more experience and made the best of it.
I don't know about the states, but I'm from the UK and I made alternate last year - so I got a Tefl and some short-term teaching experince in Japan and they wouldn't even offer me an interview! But do your best and don't give up!

Hello!

Just a little update for peeps who didn`t/don`t get JET!

I didn`t get JET (read long, ranting threads) and after taking the job at the Uni in the UK I got a transfer to Japan!

My students are great, good pay and a place to live! In addition to that living in the UK a little longer meant I also met my current Boyfriend who is awesome (and Japanese).

So, what I`m really trying to say is if you don`t get it - it`s not the end of the world. I was pretty upset about not getting it but everything turned out fine.

I hope this helps!
