Puma - I`m sure somewhere it explains the part where you don`t have to claim that little interest earned. I`m not sure where it is or what the limit is (that`s below it, I`m sure), but I think when I did my taxes online it automatically kicked out the number because of it being so low. I wouldn`t worry about it (and I`m one who tends to worry about details).
Yeah I was told that if you don't owe anything and didn't make any American income then it really isn't a problem... I didn't file last year but maybe this year I'll just do two years' worth at once.

as long as you eventually file, it SHOULDNT be a problem. I have a friend tahts been here in japan for 7 years now and hasnt filed ever, but the IRS just started sending him letters.

For most of my working life, i was about a year behind, but was always owed money or I didnt owe anything and nothing ever happened, now that i am sponsoring my wife for her immigration visa in the summer, i had to be all caught up. so i just sat down and did it. think i will do this years this weekend maybe.

Because they're only infamous for what they do to people who actually owe them money, and if you owe them nothing, there will typically be absolutely zero or slight consequences? It's better to be condescending about something that makes sense, rather than playing up "blowing off the IRS" like a capital crime.

why even take the risk? if you owe nothing, you can do your whole taxes state and federal in one day. are people really THAT fucking lazy?

i find it interesting that short of working through an entire 1040 and all worksheets and schedules, people are aware of the exact dollar figure they owe--or could be refunded.

perhaps you didn't get the memo, but the IRS can seriously fuck up your life

Or, it's better to just file your fucking taxes like a responsible individual than making excuses.

I've seen a lot more of what the IRS can do than I want to. I'm not arguing that it's not easy to do taxes or that people shouldn't just get it over with, but look at precedent. When you owe money or make errors in your filing that result in heavy penalties, the IRS can take a vicious grip on your financial life, and fighting with them is damn near impossible. When you don't owe money, you can blow off filing, as many have done, and there is a chance that nothing will happen. If something does happen, it will be minimal, as they can only penalize you for not filing. The problem is that not all people are motivated by fear, especially when there's not a good reason to believe those fears are real.

nah, i just cant believe anyone would try and justify not filing taxes, whether you owe or not. you still have to file, why wouldnt you just do it? theres no excuse.

but then again theres always the element that puma said it, so lets poke and prod about it just because

For fuck's sake, I'm not trying to justify it. Like FiercestCalm said, it's weird that you decided to take such a condescending stance on filing taxes. If someone talks about smoking weed, I expect you to step in like a man (read: like a dick) and angrily point out that it's plain and simple WRONG and that anyone who does it is "unbelievable".

Props to that

I think the minute they see a Japanese W2 they're all like FUCK THIS, and don't even bother investigating it.

I've just sent in my last 2 years last week, and since I know I didn't really owe anything they're not going to care.

Oh and I disagree I do think you flaunt your experience (what little you have of it) and you are definitely a condescending pompous prick.
Oh, and when you feel threatened you play the man and not the ball, like now.

It's a pretty well-timed event, yes. However, are we 100% sure the reason he was pissed is that he blew off the IRS?
