Somehow this brings up a memory of a fun lesson I had when I was in JH myself. Randomly the teacher told us to write the directions - How do you make a Peanut butter and Jelly sandwich?
The next day he went through the stack of papers students wrote for directions. He took all of them literally. For example, "spread the peanut butter on the bread" = he spread gobs of peanut butter on top of the entire loaf of bread with his hands. etc. etc. His point was to get us to be specific in our writing. In the end there was peanut butter all over the classroom and everyone was laughing. I don't have any experience with this lesson/ book. But maybe you could do an activity where students write their own How do you lists, and other students (or teacher?) can have a go at acting them out. You could do a demonstration example to show them it can be humorous. I suppose it depends on your kids' levels. If they struggle with writing, maybe another idea would be better - like have pre-made lists and students just attempt to read them / listen to them and follow directions. Good luck, and if it goes well, share what you did so we can steal it!

That would be hilarious and fun, but yeah, unfortunately quite a few of these kids are lower level. Also, I would go through way too much peanut butter, since this will be for 10 classes.
![]() I'm thinking of doing "how do you draw Mickey Mouse?" And going through the steps on the board (using this site: How to Draw Mickey Mouse), and the kids can follow on a worksheet. |

I wound up making a worksheet so they could interview eachother on "how do you go to ~?" (supermarket, homeroom teacher's house, Osaka, Australia, etc) with a list of stuff like "roller coaster, horse, tank, F1 car." they thought it was funny and enjoyed it, but it didn't teach the grammar point very well, i think, because then we did the "how do you use a furoshiki" and they were like "huh?"

Oh hey - that's a cute idea for an activity. Sounds like something the students would enjoy. Maybe it was 'use' that threw them off, since they did your lesson with go. How do you + other verbs might drive it home ?? In any case, thanks for sharing.

Yeah. A different JTE opened the lesson with "This is an uchiwa." "How do you use it?" "We use it like this! *fans self* We use it in the summer." Explained "How do you~" Then segued into "How do you go to ~?" with my worksheet. I think it was better to do it in that order.
