    Re: English Textbook insanity

Not straight up textbook, but 2/3 of the JTEs I work with think that Japan is the only country where there's 7 colors in the rainbow...

    Re: English Textbook insanity

I liked the 'lets go to the UK for a 2 day 3 night vacation.' The "Dolphin Tale" unit, on the other hand... well pretty much all of New Horizon 3 is pretty trash after the first unit.
  3. Re: An actual genuine question I don't know the answer to

The insurance thing is the only reason I've ever heard that ALTs aren't allowed to teach alone. I had the chance to talk to someone from MEXT directly last fall, and they wouldn't come out and say...

I wish. Unfortunately there's archaic policies in place (in my school) that mean digital textbooks can't be copied to the server.

    Re: English Textbook insanity

I showed a few to my HRTs, but they're 'muzukashii' in a few ways. Mostly that the HRTs don't know how to use the network connections in their classrooms so they can't play anything off the...
  8. Re: what do you wish you'd have known before coming to Japan?

Focus on your communication skills. Your job is 90% decided on how well you can communicate with your supervisor (who probably doesn't speak any English) and your JTEs (Japanese English Teachers)...

    Re: Waitlist/Re-application

Take the other job and if you get a placement with JET and still want it, take it. Otherwise turn it down if the time comes.

Got around to reading the extra guides and shit for the new elementary school curriculum. Whoever wrote a couple of the guides has no idea that Hi, Friends is included in We Can, and one of the...

  13. Re: Are there students you teach that you just dislike or are not fond of?

The changes to high school entrance examinations IIRC after next year are probably fueling that. I've got first years who go to juku because their parents are nervous that the won't make it into...
  14. Re: The application forms - minor details/mistakes that could cause you to be rejecte

    Re: Is a Driver's License a dealmaker/breaker?

In my area there's a new JET without a license (never took driving courses etc) who has 4 schools per week. The closest one is maybe 1 km away. The furthest one is almost 10 km away. Doable on a...

    Re: Is a Driver's License a dealmaker/breaker?

Get it relatively soon if you want to come to Japan. Public transportation is nice, until you get to the inaka and there's a bus at 5:00 and 18:00 and nothing in between. Not so necessary if you...

    Re: Clair Japanese Study course.

Interesting, I'm using some old tri-lingual Kanzen master N3/N2 books. I wonder if I should sign up for the next one then.

  19. Re: Shortlisted, but have some paperwork questions

For number 1. You might not have received your JET number yet. When I came on JET, I didn't get my number until I received my placement IIRC. Most likely it'll be in the form 2017XXXXXXX. 11...

    Re: 2017 Alternate List

  21. Re: Are there students you teach that you just dislike or are not fond of?

That's a silly question. I dislike all of my students pretty equally. Somewhere between regular revulsion and loathing, maybe with a pinch of pity thrown in.

Re: Shortlisted but no passport! Help!

Well basically, it boils down to: Less than 36% of US citizens can afford to or have the motivation to travel abroad. Somehow the other 64% get by without it. I'd assume the majority of them don't...

Re: Shortlisted but no passport! Help!

You need to get a passport in order to get the card. It's an add-on.

The thing is, where are you going when you go abroad? If you you're not a Europhile or Japanophile, you can hit all the major...

Re: Shortlisted but no passport! Help!

Less than 36% of Americans have a passport. So they're more lenient. In the UK that number is closer to 80%.
