Re: Best and worst parts of Rural life in Japan

    Community.

    For both.

I love how friendly my town is, but there is a huge lack of privacy.

Re: "The Last Supper" Thread for 2015 JETs

Blueberries are like one of the only affordable fruits at my grocery, but only around August.
(I also have an agricultural high school, and I think they grow them, so that could be why they're...

Re: "The Last Supper" Thread for 2015 JETs

No frozen fruits at all at my inaka grocery store, but you can buy all kinds from Amazon, not too expensive.

I gorged on pizza for the last month and the morning before I left I had a huge bowl of...
  5. Poll: Re: Current/former JETs: How many schools do/did you teach in?

There was a former JET at my pre-departure orientation who worked at like 38 schools or something ridiculous. It was because every month (week?) the ALTs rotated visiting a different elementary...

    Re: EARTHQUAKES!!!

I have a combined near 15 months in Japan, and I have never felt an earthquake (Kansai/Chugoku regions).
I wonder if other prefectures do this? But my prefecture actually had a whole seminar on...

    Re: People with offspring

Alternative schools do exist here. In my town we have a forest kindergarten and a Sudbury school (the kids attend SS part time and regular elementary school part time). I think its unusual, but you...
  8. Re: Did any JETs get their degree JUST before their departure?

Last year the proof of graduation was due on June 20th.

    Re: For the rejected.

I guess this is another ESID thing? Because I am almost never at school on the weekends (like, maybe 4 times a year, if that) and I know that tons of other JETs in my prefecture are constantly going...

    Re: Aspiring US JETs 2015

Last year the USA got results first, on March 31. I'm Canadian and got mine on April 3rd. I think there was a consulate that had some delays and didn't release results until like the 7th or...

    Re: Aspiring Canadian JETs 2015

It was over a weekend, yes. And you can definitely do only 1 or 2 of the days (I skipped the 3rd day myself). The first two days were JET or life in Japan related stuff and the third day was only...

    Re: Aspiring Canadian JETs 2015

    You're from Toronto, yeah?

Toronto actually has a butt-ton of predeparture orientations. However, the only one that is mandatory is one or two days before departure. It's just one...

I feel like randomly being asked to sing a song is a pretty accurate treatment of an ALT, though.

    Re: Bringing money to Japan

Yeah - it was basically 3 months' rent.
However, my pred did warn me about the key money beforehand, so at least it wasn't a surprise. My supervisor wasn't super anxious to take the money either, so...

    Re: Bringing money to Japan

    To add my own experience...

I did have to pay key money - nearly 2k of it.
My salary is direct deposited (as is anything else - I get child benefits and when I'm reimbursed for travel expenses),...

    Re: People with offspring

I'm not sure if there was something specific you're thinking of, but to be honest...in general, my kid (4yo) is better behaved than a lot of Japanese kids. Parents here seem to be pretty lenient with...

    Re: Bringing money to Japan

I just brought it all in cash.
Possibly not the best idea, but Japan is pretty safe and I didn't feel like dealing with ATMs and crap (plus my bank account back home doesn't let me use the debit...

    Re: People with offspring

Just knock the kids out with Gravol; problem solved.

Seriously, though, having them on Japan time right from the start can help with adjusting to the time difference.

  20. Re: How bad is the flight, and cost for tickets for accompanying family?

    It's true though.

They had free alcohol on my flight. People decided to have a party in front of my seat. Rageful times ensued.

I'm from Ontario. It cost me $85 for the Doctor's examination (CoH). I also paid $50 for the 2-step TB test instead of the x-ray. I did it at my student health center, and they don't do x-rays unless...
  23. Re: Canadian Interviews - Any JETs know the time slots?

Last year I was in the last time slot on the last day. It was like 3:15pm though, so seems a bit later this year! The told me 20 minutes, but it took 30.
Anyway, turned out alright for me.

    Re: Aspiring Canadian JETs 2015

The candidate card was where we circled which level we wanted to teach (ES, JHS, HS, no pref).

For the interview last year, I don't think I sent back confirmation, but if its the same they should send you some forms...
