Sticky: Re: Not so obvious advice for new ALTs

I think this is a really good suggestion. It seems to work pretty well for a lot of ALTs.

Sticky: Re: Not so obvious advice for new ALTs

He couldn't even replicate it himself with his "all Cantonese all the time" challenge. Clearly there was something that clicked in his brain when he started studying Japanese and he went through one...

  4. Working a second job alongside ALT work

It was at a studio. You might be able to find private students directly, but your Japanese will have to be really excellent (it's hard enough to teach kids music even when you share a native...
  5. Re: Working a second job alongside ALT work

I applied for a piano teaching job recently, but got turned down when the woman asked for my name and realized I was a foreigner (we had already scheduled a time and date and an audition piece, and...

    Re: Irish application questions 2015

Just list the total. Don't try to subtract out summer months. Think of it as the time you were enrolled, not just the time you were in classes.

    Re: After application process?

The people who actually hire the JETs are local education boards, so the information about qualified applicants has to be sent to Japan for them to make the final decision. Some education boards want...

I understand what you mean. Is there an opportunity to do a summer graduation ceremony instead?

    Re: JET Programme & Graduation

As long as you send it proof of completing your degree you'll be fine.

As with a lot of things on JET, you can probably get your way if you push hard enough, but it's also a matter of how much of...

    Cell phones in Japan

Your life will be much, much easier if you just anticipate that you'll have to sign up for a contract and pay around 7000 yen per month. Anything less than that is going to be extremely impractical,...

    Re: After application process?

From what I know, applications are screened at the national level first by a team of temporary employees the embassy hires to evaluate them and assign points. It would be way too many applications...

    Re: Breaks/Vacation?

To be fair, I think that this is the part of learning Japanese that has been the hardest for me. It takes a lot of accumulated hours of fucking up and having native speakers correct you.
  17. Re: Happy to go in April - but no Certificate of Health ready

Prazza, what country are you applying from? It would probably be best to contact the embassy directly with that question.

  19. Re: Piercings on the Self-Assessment Medical Form?

There was quite a kerfuffle last year over the mayor of Osaka saying that public employees shouldn't have tattoos at all, and anecdotally I heard that it affected ALT placements there as well.

Re: Clothing advice for new JETs

Come to think of it, I've never heard of a female ALT whose BOE or coworkers had any problems with hairstyles - I've heard about clothing, makeup, jewelry, perfume, etc., but not hair.

I worked at a Starbucks by Akihabara station for a very brief time while studying abroad. I would say the clientele was 60 percent average Tokyo salarymen and/or housewives, 5 percent otaku, and 35...
