  1. Re: No Give Alien Registration = I Can't Haz Pension?

I have my card still. The guy punched a hole in it and gave it back to me after I filled out the "I'm leaving for good" form. I think as long as they have that form it counts as canceled. I have no...
  2. Re: Worried about getting rid of everything in my apartment if successor changes loca

Try "(prefecture) 家庭ゴミ回収" though cost might depend on your area.
  3. Re: Worried about getting rid of everything in my apartment if successor changes loca

Call a private disposal company. They might pay you for metal items they can scrap, and the company I used ended up being cheaper than calling the regular garbage folks. Also, be careful with recycle...

The Big Guide to Shipping Stuff Home

Hello folks. As I just recently returned home with a bunch of stuff, I thought it'd be nice to pass along all the info I gathered in my quest to get everything home.

    For those who are returning...

    Re: Recruitment agencies?

Update: found a position with a company using a recruiter. The agent I got is pretty communicative and the position he found for me seems good. I start on Monday. We'll see how it goes.

Sure, as long as you do the method they recommend where you have different piles or whatever. I forget the details, but it's a way to make sure you review the cards every once in a while. Get a...

I used to use the White Rabbit flash cards along with reading pretty much everything I could. Anki works as well, but I am lazy about setting up decks. I like renshuu.org since it's free and doesn't...

    International Banking/Bringing $

I got my account through my mom, since her dad was in the military. I believe it's restricted to spouses and descendants of account holders, regardless of their own military status. So, you might...

    Re: Recruitment agencies?

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Currently, I'm talking with the TOP group, and they seem ok. I previously tried to work with an agency but that fell through when the lady never contacted me back...

    Re: International Banking/Bringing $

USAA is great. I believe they don't have fees to use foreign ATMs, or if they do they're cheap, and they give you a decent rate. Plus, it's easy to just wire a bunch of money to your Japanese account.

Soy milk is available everywhere. I don't remember seeing any other non-dairy milks, but there's always Costco.

    Recruitment agencies?

Anyone have any luck using an agency to find a job, specifically in the US? I've had a number get in contact with me after I uploaded resumes to job search sites. It'd be nice to use one to make job...

    Re: Japan and Phones

I think a lot of the delay is due to supervisors getting too busy to fill out the paperwork. Both times I signed up for Internet on my own, once with NTT and once with YahooBB, took 2-3 weeks from...

Re: leopalace no visitors for more than one week!

Those rules are BOE rules, not Leopalace rules. Usually the apartment is rented in their name, and these rules are in place because long term visitors will be seen as stiffing the BOE on rent. If...

Pension stuff you can do yourself except for the second part/income tax refund. Just get someone else who's going to be there at least a year to be your tax rep. They don't have to be Japanese.

Re: Actual Career-oriented jobs for Gaijin

There are companies here that expect you to clock out at your official end of work time, and continue working. One of my JTEs does it of his own volition because the boss didn't like him staying late...

Sounds like you just need a career change, not necessarily involving moving back to Japan. Maybe you should try to find a job outside of your current field and see how you feel after a year or two....
  24. Re: What do you guys do to get through boredom/isolation at work?

Seriously. Go grab a rag and clean something. Surely your school has a big storage room full of teaching materials that probably needs dusting and organizing.
