Yea, I've heard that, too. I don't say it because I'm scared of mixing up American Indians and Indian-Americans.

Native Americans, I think. Though if you wanted to teach them about real American culture, make your students read Tom Sawyer, and tell them to call them Injuns.

Sounds about like me and my whiteness. Get me outside on a sunny day, and my whiteness is more painful to the eyes than the sun is.

Oh no, are you sure? That really sucks... But if it makes you feel any better, I was pretty underwhelmed with the scores that I saw during my interview.

And LOL@Marauder. I would love to see a...

Re: "So how'd your interview go?" 2009

Ahhh, okok, that makes sense. I knew someone that just barely failed the 2kyu exam (1%, WTF), and I think he could probably have gotten by as a CIR since his conversational skills were pretty decent.

Re: "So how'd your interview go?" 2009

Level 3? That's really not all that great, unless they meant the new 3kyu. You only need to know a few hundred kanji and a thousand or so words, which wouldn't be good enough to get you by in an...

Re: "So how'd your interview go?" 2009

I think you did the right thing. I'm pretty sure I've always been told that the interviewer should initiate the handshake. Of course, I've also always been told that if you are a man, you should wait...

Re: "So how'd your interview go?" 2009

I think there have been a few ALTs who originally applied as CIRs. It's not unheard of, but I'm not sure it's exactly common either. I think it depends on how well your interview went outside of the...

Someone I know in Japan who is half-Asian and fluent in Japanese (dialect and all) tried speaking with someone official... They told him they wanted to speak to a "real" Japanese person instead.

Is it bad that this is how most of the people in my high school talked? Because I just got flashbacks reading this.

Re: "So how'd your interview go?" 2009

I could see what one of my interviewers was doing on his score sheet, and he was obviously trying to make me uncomfortable on top of it... It didn't even occur to me to file a report. I'd advise your...

Re: "So how'd your interview go?" 2009

It sounds like they might have been trying to play bad cop with you. I could be wrong since I wasn't there... But that sounds like it would be kind of mean to just flat out say in an interview. Maybe...

In Chicago two years ago, something like 360 were interviewed and about 220 went to Japan. Those numbers will definitely be lower this year, but it seems like Chicago's odds may be a bit better than...

That's how many people in the US were granted interviews. Kinda wish there was a way to know how many people actually accepted and went, though.

Wait, were there four people on your panel (three that you knew plus one)? And really, that does seem a bit unfair if you knew everyone that interviewed you. I know when the head of the J department...

I hope not. The only laughing reaction I got was when I said Tokyo was both easier to get around than Chicago and that I felt safer there (Tokyo). I got the feeling they thought I was stupid :x
