  1. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

Interpreting and translating, especially conference interpreting.

Being an ALT in Japan would definitely help my language ability immeasurably, but I don't know if it's worth taking years off of...
  2. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

Are you referring to something I said?
  3. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

I study like 6 hours a day, I hardly sleep anymore.

I have thought about that, but I don't know if that year or more would be better spent there teaching, or here working at my paid interpreting...
  4. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

Deal with it, since I wouldn't know what the position entails until I get there.

Probably the other person. I'd rather come off as inflexible than have to wait two years to reapply.

    I am not...

Re: Any '17/18 aspirers out there?

That's cool that they were open.

I asked because I saw some people talking about contacting JET coordinators to help with the application process like mentors, and I was like I don't think that...
  6. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

Did you have N2 or N1?

I don't have NNS any level, so I'm crossing my fingers that I'll even get an interview. If I take the test in December, I don't know if I'll get the results before February...
  7. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

Looks like a lot of CIRs come from my country, which is good news.

I'm not sure that I want to pray for an ALT->CIR change while already there, it seems really risky.

Anyone heard of JET coordinators who we can talk to during the application process?

I thought that the only communication channels we got before getting a placement were from...

Re: Any '17/18 aspirers out there?

Hi! I'm getting ready to apply for 2017, too.

Do you know what position you'll go for yet? I'm aiming for CIR.
  10. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

I would prefer CIR though, and if I don't get it I want to try again for 2018. The JET website makes me think that if I were offered an ALT position and turned it down, then I would have to wait to...

    Re: Application Process Order

Wow, I always thought ALTs were the main focus of the program, and SEAs and CIRs were less needed, in that order.

I have read so many stories about JETs being treated like outsiders by their own...

    Re: Application Process Order

    Were any of them CIRs?

I know the ALT interview is mainly answering a bunch of trick questions, so blowing that def doesn't mean that you can't do the job. CIRs have to prove their lang skills in...

    Re: Application Process Order

So having a certain score with the paper application gets you the interview, and that score decides what score you need on the interview to get shortlisted or waitlisted? All right.
  15. CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

How many CIRs are sent from each consulate each year?

Is it possible for a CIR to be NNS N2-level without having ever studied the language in Japan?

    Application Process Order

When you apply, all of the documents-- statement of purpose, letters of reference, transcripts, yadda-- only go into making you have an interview or not, right? So, if you get an interview, the only...

I'm not really looking into long term English teaching for myself. I do have some friends who are training to be teachers, though, and we had been talking about teaching English overseas in a more...

How easy is it to jump ship with a work visa? Because ALT work gets you an Instructor work visa, so if you want to do anything else like eikawa or waiting tables you'd have to find a sponsor all over...

Re: Getting a Leopalace on your Own?

That's good to hear. I'll look into it, then. I just had no idea it would be that straightforward if so many were overlooking the option.

I've been looking at the apartments available on the...

I haven't applied to Heart, I was thinking about it though. I just know about the Leopalace thing from researching it and similar companies like Interac and RCS.

    Sounds like doing Leopalace solo...

Re: Getting a Leopalace on your Own?

Thanks. Is it really that simple, and they speak English? I wonder if you can request a place without being in the country? 19,000 more a month is a big old premium for no particular benefit from the...

Getting a Leopalace on your Own?

A running theme I've noticed with the private ALT companies is that they like to put teachers into apartments owned by the company Leopalace. Does anyone have any idea why that may be the case? Are...
