Re: Reasons for not receiving an interview?

Either the Canadian embassy handles applications very differently than the US or that guy was fucking with you. There's a whole team of people who put your application in order, take out/put in...

    US Applications - Megathread

This is the thread for pretty much anything relating to US applications - questions, discussions, asking for people to review their SOP etc.

    From the JET Program Facebook:

    The 2017 JET...

Re: Any '17/18 aspirers out there?

You can always just call or email your local consulate's coordinator if you have specific questions. They're generally pretty happy to answer, as long as the questions aren't easily google-able.

Re: What to wear at Elementary School

Late to the party, but in Nagahama it's very normal to be placed in just one elementary school - you may even have another ALT in the school with you if it's big enough. I think there were at least...

Re: Setting up a new apartment in Nagahama

If they're not providing the futon, it's very likely that your supervisor/principal/whoever from your school would go shopping with you the day you arrive to get the essentials.

Re: Setting up a new apartment in Nagahama

I had a friend who actually also got a new apartment in Nagahama - this was in 2010. In her case, the BOE found the apartment for her (it was actually a very nice townhouse). She did not have to pay...
  7. Re: Current & Former JETs - Your best and worst experience as a JET?

You'd have to come up with like 8-10 activities that don't involve any supplies. I can think of a few (sing head shoulders knees and toes or any other kids songs you know, count to 10, teach them to...

    Re: 2016 Applications: Placements Megathread

City placement means you'll either be full time Elementary or Jr High. It's one of the rare cities where English is taught in ES grades 1-6. There are a few schools in Nagahama that have two ALTs...

    :D

My placement back in the olden days! It's one of the best ones in Japan.

    Teaching English to adults

I've recently been 'volunteered' by my boss to do a weekly hour-long English lesson for some of my Japanese coworkers. I taught elementary school as a JET and have next to no experience teaching...
  11. Re: Those who have or plan to travel with a partner, but not a spouse...thoughts?

Your JET Coordinator can give you advice, but they're not going to be able to do anything for you practically. Whether or not you can live with someone is up to your contracting...

    Re: Japanese Earthquake 2016 victims

From the information I have as of this morning (in Japan), of the 779 JETs in Kumamoto and surrounding prefectures, 588 have been confirmed as safe, 34 have been evacuated (but still safe and...

    Re: 2016 Alternates Thread

Hey there alternates. I may or may not have been involved in interviews this year as an interviewer (I try to keep things low-key around here).

Being an alternate doesn't mean you're 'not good...
  14. Re: How much luggage to take with you when moving to Japan?

It can seem pretty obvious to current/previous JETs, but it's not exactly super clear for incoming.

This is for the US - other countries get different allowances.

    Generally, you take two...

    Re: Aspiring US JETs 2016

Many consulates have a Q&A session in the summer a month or two before departure, but most don't have exact dates or locations at this time, which would be why information hasn't been shared.

    Re: Aspiring US JETs 2016

It probably has to do with how they send the emails (different mass-mailing systems) and whether or not it allows attachments. I don't think there's any deeper reasoning behind it.
  17. Re: Is it possible to survive a not-so-great/bad interview?

It's a possibility that both embassy and consulate staff are reading JET forums and groups. I heard of one person who was contacted and told to take his description of the interview down from...
  18. Re: Relaxed Interviewers: Ominous or Inconsequential?

There is no handbook out there somewhere that tells JET interviewers that they must be cold and aggressive - the tone of the interview depends mainly on the personality of the people on your...

    Re: Aspiring US JETs 2016

Sam (and word) are right, best not to bring anything in with you to the interview. In some Consulates, they won't even allow you to bring anything in at all for security reasons.

    Re: Aspiring US JETs 2016

This is entirely dependent on where you're interviewing. Some consulates let you choose your date from a calendar, some will just assign you a date and time.

    Re: Aspiring US JETs 2016

In most cases, they'll be the one checking you in and who you have to give your interview voucher to. There probably won't be many other people in the waiting room, so it should be pretty obvious.

    Re: Good southeast Asian airlines?

I had a pretty terrible time with Air Asia when I used it (stuck in Kuala Lumpur for about 24 hours after a flight got delayed, and ended up having to buy a ticket from another airline). If you have...

    Re: Deadline Extension

They said some people writing reference letters were having trouble submitting them through the online portal - that's the official reason, anyway.
  24. Re: Studying Abroad while Applying for JET - transcript?

    Re: Questions Regarding School Placements

Within the curriculum, I had quite a bit of freedom - so as long as I taught the students that particular dialogue and/or vocab, I could do it in whatever way I wanted. There was also some room for...
