    You still can.
  2. Re: Finished JET and went home, but Supervisor just found out I did outside work

It is surely possible that you could have trouble getting into Japan again.

  6. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

You have never interpreted Japanese before and you want to make a career out of it? I'd say that's worth a rethink.

    You didn't believe me?

My Japanese level was tour guide interpreter...
  7. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

I don't think not considering a job you don't want is arrogant.
  8. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

    That's right.

    N2 is fine.
The test portion of my interview was absurdly short and easy. They may go more in depth if you can't provide a passing certificate of N2 or N1.
  9. Re: CIR Requirements and How Many are Sent Each Year

Current CIR. Never teach. Basically a desk job with occasional events, guest reception, interpretation, etc.
Almost all CIRs I've met are in public offices, though some do teach. Not sure about how...

Re: Sendai - tell me all about it!

Sendai is the best city in Japan. Not isolated. 90 minutes from Ueno Station by shinkanesen. 7500 yen flights to Osaka on Peach (1 hour).
  13. Re: I'll possibly be 36 when I start JET - would that be too old?

In my prefecture we have three ALTs and a CIR 36 or older.

For this one, I think you should sit down with a lawyer.

Very doubtful indeed, but not unquestionable if she's in a village of a few hundred people.

Re: URGENT: Lost IDP and Freaking Out

Also, if you do go through with telling your supe, maybe you can talk to the police. Depending on the size of your town, they may tell you you're OK as long as you stay in town. They may have...

Re: URGENT: Lost IDP and Freaking Out

You're not going to lose your job, but legally you should probably tell your supervisor, and stop driving. Somebody may pick you up for the time being. My guess is they'll just have somebody from a...

  22. Re: Confused about how much taxes are for American JETs in their 3rd, 4th, 5th year?

The bank does not have to ask you for it. The US government wants it done, but Japanese law doesn't mandate it. Some of our new American ALTs had to, but not all.
  23. Re: Confused about how much taxes are for American JETs in their 3rd, 4th, 5th year?

Like Ebi said, you do still need to file, and it's actually more complicated. Also, file your state taxes as well, as you may owe some there. Lastly, 9% is a pretty dang good tax rate, don't feel too...
  24. Re: Confused about how much taxes are for American JETs in their 3rd, 4th, 5th year?

You're exempt from American federal (but possibly not state) taxes the whole time. Japanese income tax on the JET salary will be roughly 8 to 10 percent. There will also be inhabitants' tax, which is...

    Re: CIR Applicants 2014

I am a current CIR and I had lunch at a beer factory with my hancho on Friday between visiting a JAXA facility and a park. It can be pretty fun.

I don't think you'll get an interview without being...
