Re: Best strategies for dealing with evil students

I'm a great fan of the stopping and staring until they stop talking. If you have clear expectations right from the start they know to sort that shit out pretty quickly. Also placement also helps e.g....

Re: My Tiny Kitchen-the cooking in Japan thread

If you're a vegetarian/vegan/baker you can get good stuff from Tengu Natural Foods. You can get all sorts of nuts, seeds, nutritional yeast, supplements, herbs etc. on here. They've also started...

    Re: Questions about Sado Island

I'm afraid I can't answer your questions, BUT just be patient and wait to hear from your predecessor. They can answer all these questions, and more. They'll just be waiting until they can contact you.

Re: Link between Education and Success in Japan

To echo Word a little, you have to remember that to different cultures and people, what constitutes as "success" is going to be vastly different. To some people here it's being married before 25 and...
  5. Re: Realistic Data Regarding Japanese Teachers' Working Hours

Yeah the only classes I know of back at home that are 18 students (or below) are the specialist senior subjects (e.g. Media Studies, Photography, Sculpture, Law). Most classes are 28-32 at home.

  6. Re: Australian JETs will make about minimum wage in 2013.

    ...I think you mean $40.

But yeah, living costs in NZ and Aussie are higher, hence the higher wage.
  7. Sticky: Re: Official "Things that can and cannot be found in Japan"

We have several bakeries in my area that make proper bagels, rye, foccacia etc. You've just got to seek them out.

However there's a serious lack of a: thin bread, and b: bread with lots of grains...

    Re: Vision Quest Support Group

Douche-sensei is still avoiding me so I haven't been able to talk to him about what he wants me to do with the VQ book. Seriously man, if you don't want to work with foreigners (something he has said...

Yeah I have a list of common classroom phrases I give to them to keep in the back of their folders like a glossary.

    Re: Vision Quest Support Group

Yeah my kids have VERY basic English. My friends thought I was exaggerating how bad their English was, until they met a graduated student from my school and he thought the appropriate answer to 'how...

    Re: Vision Quest Support Group

I'll be doing my self-introduction first, and then probably classroom English. And then move on to self-introductions. Mine are low enough that it'll be newish to them (some are coming in without the...

    Re: Vision Quest Support Group

Yeah I'm basically going to try to use as much as my previous lesson materials as much as possible, since it appears I'm being loaded with more classes this year, so far less planning time.

    Re: Vision Quest Support Group

My shield lesson is just basically an introduction activity to the class and students (since they're all new to the school/class). It's a blank shield divided into 6 and each section has a title e.g....

    Re: Vision Quest Support Group

Brilliant. I am still to talk to my JTEs about what they want me to do with this book, since I'll only be taking 1 out of the 3-4 'communication' classes they will have using it every week. I'm...
  16. Re: Do GPA/transcripts matter all that much for successfuly applying?

The marks don't matter. My University marks were horrendous with failed papers and substandard marks (due to many personal reasons), but I still got a degree. My marks were never brought up during my...

Both the dialogue boxes have popped up while posting a reply. I haven:t had one since yesterday though so it may have been a mini glitch on my side for all I know.

    Re: VBulletin software upgrade

Getting a lot of weird ad placement, in between replies in threads. It's not overly bad, but I keep thinking I've reached the end of a page when I'm only a few entries in.

    Also when I post...

In saying that, my specific area only employs ALTs with English as a second language, and some came here with very limited (if non-existent) Japanese. We had a guy from France, one from Holland and a...

Re: Have you turned in your application?

Don't worry. You'll look back at your application and go 'OH GOD' so many times. I found a glaring error in my SOP but I was still accepted. There is no such thing as a perfect application
