    <tt>Hi all,

I got a phone call from the JET desk in London early this evening
asking whether i wished to be upgraded.
Couldn"t believe it!! The lady that i spoke to was very nice and
didn"t seem at all phased by my excited blabbering. This must be a
good sign for those of us have been on the alternate list for the
past month. Hang on in there the rest of the alternates.

    <tt>Hiya,

I finished work just before 18:00 and i had an voice mail on my
phone from a lady called Zoe who said that it was important that i
called them back before 17:30. Panicking i called the JET desk back
and left a garbled message that i"d been at work and that i"d call
again tomorrow when they opened at 09:30.
At about 18:15 my mobile started ringing, although i was driving and
i realise that i shouldn"t have answered it, i had a sense of
impending good fortune. Zoe was very friendly and explained that she
was working later and that she would have waited until tommorrow
morning before offering the upgrade to someone else. I was so
excited for the remainder of the journey that i passed a police car
while i was doing 45mph in a 30. I almost crapped myself but he
    didn"t appear interested thank god.

As far as other options go, i"d convinced myself that it wasn"t my
year and as such had begun applying for other things. It made the
    phone call even more surprising.

I really do hope that you get upgraded as the alternate list is a
very perculiar place to be. I"ll keep my fingers firmly crossed for
    you and the other alternates.

How do we mischieviously pursue those non-official channels? I know
that likely means contacting current JETs and employment companies
that have contracted with JET, but I don"t know how we could do this.

    Jackie,
Most of the people that know their placement have not found ou
through the official channels. So you really need not worry.

When did you find out? How? By a letter/email?

    <tt>Hello,

Lots of new JETs have been asking about learning Katakana. One thing that
has proved really useful is the matching pairs type of game, so I"ve just
put up four talking games covering the whole katakana alphabet on the
    www.GenkiJapan.net site.

There are adverts on the page itself, but the games are totally free, so I
hope nobody is offended by me posting the message here!

If you do have time to get some basic katakana you"ll be a star amongst your
fellow JETs as you"ll be able to read the names of foreign foods (and
    beers!) on menus.

If there are any other materials that people would like to see for learning
Japanese, then please let me know. I have lots of ideas for things for the
Japanese site, but I"m not sure which ones people would like to see first!

    Be genki,

    Richard

Aww yeah, I got upgraded yesterday too: such an amazing feeling! It

The outgoing JETs usually know before the official announcement who
is coming in, unless their supervisor is an a$$ However, the JETs are
supposed to keep it quiet until the official release the names day,
just in case that 0.0000001% chance of the name change actually
occurrs. Obviously, some JETs ignore this rule (good for them!) and
    contact the incoming people early.

So I guess this is what happened!!

How do we mischieviously pursue those non-official channels? I
    know
that likely means contacting current JETs and employment
    companies
that have contracted with JET, but I don"t know how we could do
    this.

They contact you, not the other way around.

    <tt>come on....

    are you serious????
katakana is nothing compared to kanji!
i remember it took me 2 hours to memorize and that"s all.
here i"m cracking my white ass and getting a headache in order
to learn enough kanji to read a newspaper and you"re suggesting
    a game to learn katakana...
yo people, take a book and learn.
    it"s easy.
    good luck!

    Hello,
