Not perfect but they all seem to have different shades of meaning.

    For instance:
    壊れた皿。A broken dish. destroyed.
地震で地面が割れた - The earthquake caused cracks in the ground.
台風でたくさんの松の木が折れた - Many pine trees were snapped by the typhoon.

I finally coaxed what I think are the differences out of some examples.

    壊れる (こわれる): Break (general?)
割れる (われる): crack apart (i.e. dish, glass)
    折れる (おれる): fold(crease?) or snap

割れる (われる): crack apart (i.e. dish, glass)
I always thought of it as "shatter”

外れる (はずれる): undone / disconnected (like a button on a shirt)

There was also one that means torn (like a bag with a hole) I think it might be 破る (やぶる)

Matching these words up with English equivlents is convenient, but be careful, I'm sure there are cases where they use a different word than you'd expect. Can't think of a broken example, but something along the lines of how you could say "hang a phone call" in Japanese

Every language can be mapped 1 to 1 with another.
