    Default South Korea

I know if I don't make it into JET I'm going to go to South Korea instead since the cost of living is cheaper(transportation and food and both super cheap), they pay for your apartment, round trip airfare and you can live in Seoul or another big city for pretty cheap as well.

I really like watching this couple's youtube videos so check it out if you are interested.

great plan, only one problem - Korea is a shit hole.

The cost of living is lower for a reason.

Have you lived there? I don't think its as bad as some people make it out to be. One of my best friends is from there and some people teaching over there really love it.

I know someone who's teaching out in Korea at the moment. Seems to like it enough that this is his second stint.

Yeah it doesn't pay that great, but its not too shabby since they pay for your housing, airfare, and you get a bonus at the end of the year. If I went with Gepik I would make 2.3 million won which = $1,465.357 USD. I want to go more for the experience than pay anyways.

Glad to see others thinking the same way. I may also head to Korea after JET if I don't find anything this side of the East Sea

As for the currency, these things run in cycles. I left Japan the first time around when the yen was 140 to the dollar. Probably not as bad as the won right now but certainly not great.

Who cares about the money, Korea is a fucking hole. Take the worst drunken chavs out of osaka and give them a country and you get Korea.

what program are you referring to?

my friend has visited korea and japan and liked korea better! also the food is top-notch. can it really be that bad? i at least hope to visit there. as for me, if i don't get JET i think i'm gonna just find another way to japan since i spent so much time learning kanji and hardly know any korean. otherwise i wouldn't mind korea at all.

GEPIK is a provincial version of the EPIK programme.

I know two people out in Korea at the moment and they are loving it. You would enjoy a good quality of life in Korea on 2.3 million Won/month btw.

I visited. It was ok. It's got a decidedly more dirty feel than Japan. I know I definitely would not want to live there anywhere outside of Seoul or Pusan.

It's dirt cheap though and the people actually have a bit of fire and life to them. The girls were hot and the food was pretty good.

Reasons why this dirty old man is thinking about teaching there.

If South Korea doesn't work out you can go to North Korea. Their tourist posters make it look like a nice place:
