The ず form (something I only started noticing in writing/speech recently, I'm sorry to say) of する is せず

    漢字を勉強せず日本語を勉強してはいけません。

And a major one: it's not "かんべき", it's "かんぺき". (Perfect)
I remember hearing かんぺき a lot, so I said that. Then one day I saw that in the dictionary it was かんべき, so I figured I'd misheard and said that. I used it a lot, actually! Then today people lol'd and I was like, "Uh, what?" And the JTE was like, "Um, it's かんぺき". I checked in the dictionary, and yeah, apparently both are feasible, but apparently かんぺきis what people say for 完璧.

One more: 直訳 (ちょくやく) is "direct/literal translation". だめ!

That's just the modern character versus the older character, like 体 versus 體 or 亀 versus 龜.

    WHOA.

    What the hell?!

I'm guessing they didn't need to write about bodies or tortoises very often. Seriously; that's not a turtle, that's a circuit diagram. It is information on how to build a robot turtle.

I'm not complaining that they were simplified, especially on the occasions I have to write them by hand, but that is definitely a turtle. If you turn it so that the left side is down, it's a nice little drawing of a turtle. It's got two legs sticking down out of its shell, a tail, and little head.

Yeah, well, that's some crazy BS if you ask me. I'm just happy they're a culture that's into streamlining their language.

I feel sorry for the poor people who have that in their names and so have to write it every time they fill out paperwork.

Speaking of unnecessary, I think that kanji's official meaning should be "needless". It should be an い-adjective.

I expect some badass new hankos to be made with that. Ideally, they'd be Western-style metal stamp things, so they'd make a big KA-CHUNK whenever you used them.

Great. Now "denki jisho" is going to stick in my mind until the end of time as the correct pronunciation.

I learned a couple more baseball terms today (after our harsh 7-0 loss).

安打(あんだ)ー basehit (already knew this one listening to news on the radio about Ichiro all the time)
打率(だりつ)- batting average (already new this one too)

2打数0安打 (2あんすう0あんだ)- 0 for 2 (just replace the appropriate numbers for other stats)
    三振(さんしん)- strike out
    ファウルカップ - jock strap
