I have a friend in Niigata, on the island there. Sado Island I think it is called. I think it is a nice place, I envy you a bit to be honest. Best of luck!

I used to live in Niigata-shi. If you need any advice about the town, by all means ask. I can recommend an OUTSTANDING sushi shop.

I've only been to Sado for the Earth Celebration in August for the last two years running but it is indeed a very nice island. It has a few good beaches - including the one we all camp at during E.C. In fact in two weeks' time a crowd of us are getting the ferry over for a beach party being hosted by the Sado ALTs. That should be fun!

From the mainland to Sado is about 2 hours by ferry from Joetsu (Naoetsu port) to Ogi (the port on Sado) but there is also a hydrofoil or another ferry that leave from the north of the prefecture in Niigata city that I think is a little faster but it drops you off at a different part of the island and since I've only ever gone there for E.C. which is based around Ogi then I've never taken that route.

There is a good crowd of JETs staying on this year on Sado and some really friendly fun people so you should have a good time!

I asked for nice scenery and mentioned my onsen experiences.
Ohh so it means Sado has fantastic weather? I'm not a big fan of snow so I might just skip out there whenever there is a nasty snow day

All 4 meters of it? I've been reading everywhere that Joetsu has the highest recorded snow fall... Anyhoo I'd love to take a look at Sado island none the less! Have you seen photos where the people go across water by some sorta big bucket boat thingy? It looks fun

Niigata does get a lot of snow - I've been here two years now, last year there was quite a lot in my opinion (coming from Scotland where we don't get that much) but this year there was hardly any. This year we had one decent weekend of powder snow on the slopes - and I was in Korea when it came!

And kawyn, Sado still get a lot of snow and I don't think the ferry runs so frequently in winter so probably not a good place to go to avoid it. If you're desperate to avoid it then hop on a train to Tokyo and enjoy life on the other side of the mountains at the weekend. But I recommend trying snowboarding or skiing atleast once while you're here - you'll be in one of the best places in Japan to do it!
