    Default journal topic ideas

With the new school year I've started helping a JTE correct student journals for a writing class. He's assigned some of the more conventional topics (favorite food and animal, who's your hero, talk about school festival... etc.) and now he's running out of ideas. He's asked me to try and come up with some ideas, only, I'm feeling a bit stale too!

I have a small list of topics (posted below), but I thought I'd ask the group as well. What journal topics have you assigned your students? What topics were fun and which ones did they hate?

Here's the tiny list I've come up with:

    - If you had 100,000,000 yen, what would you do with it?
    - If you could invent one thing, what would it be?
    - If you could travel one place, where would you go?
    - If you could change one thing about school, what would you change?
    - Have you climbed Mount Fuji? If no, do you want to? If yes, do you want to climb it again?
    - If you could meet any person, who would you meet?

Way too early maybe, but for my Thanksgiving lesson I had my students write about what they're thankful for and their opinions on Thanksgiving. Probably the most interesting assignment I've read from them! They seemed to be really interested in the topic too.

For the same students, I have a new class with them where for a few weeks they simply just wrote a few sentences about their day (at least twice a week). Sounds kinda boring at first, but it was really great and many of them got creative. It gave me an idea of what topics interest them and what they like to do... Many wrote about how they celebrated holidays and what they thought of current events.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what (x number) things would you bring with you and why?
You are given three wishes by a genie - what do you wish for? Why?
If you could be one animal, what would you be? Why?
    Do you believe in ghosts/aliens?
What's your favorite place in the world? Why?
What are your earliest memories from when you were a baby?

Those are some off the top of my head - this place has a shitload of general conversation starters too that you could probably use or adapt:

    Those are great, thank you!

Marrissey, that website is AMAZING. I was looking online but just not using the right keywords. "Conversation starters" did the trick!

    What's your most embarrassing moment?
Who is your favorite teacher in school?
    What is your morning routine?
What is your dream girlfriend/boyfriend like?
If you could go anywhere in Japan, where would you go?
If you could go anywhere in (insert your home country), where would you go?

I always got interesting stuff from the embarrassing moment one lol.
