Thread: Heisig Moderation

  1. #1

    Default Heisig Moderation

Interesting. I found the original link to this thread. It was linked to in Khatzumoto of AJATT's twitter. It was then linked to again on the RTK forum as Nukemarine said. Funnily enough, I don't think it was posted by Khatzumoto as an attack. Looking at his other tweets, he posts quotes that it seems he generally agrees with. Here's his tweet:

"reading is the most powerful language teacher." http://tinyurl.com/ofs6x7 -- And so are TV and movies!6:54 PM May 15th from web

Seems like he just wanted to give AV materials the same status as written ones. I'm ok with that, but it's not a contradiction or condemnation of what I wrote. The repost to RTK is likely where the problem started. And then the kid who didn't read my post carefully enough managed to miss the fact that in general we agreed on topics though we have different ways of speaking about it. And away we went to the races.

On a sidenote, I find the blanket censorship a bit closeminded and counterproductive. The fact is that this message I'm typing is less useful to the OP (though he's likely long-gone, now, due to this massive debate which I tried to avoid by intentionally writing as non-controversial an initial post to begin with) than Nukemarine's first post to this thread, pre-censorship, of course, seeing as how it's missing 2 steps. I'm curious to know if there are moderators who are for the method-that-shall-not-be-named that also agreed to this censorship. As it is, it seems a bit one-sided and makes me feel like I would need to watch what I say in terms of kanji learning methods on other threads even when it would be appropriate to speak about the method-that-shall-not-be-named.

There is not a blanket moderation.

Another thread has been created for Heisig discussion. And there are also several other threads.

The problem is that thread on another topic was being hijacked by something that has been discussed extensively before and could have been discussed again in a new thread. In fact several warnings were given by moderators to keep on topic, which were ignored.

It is site policy to ask people nicely to remain on topic and not hijack threads and I think we've been really gentle with the moderation on this issue so far. Further hijacking will result in bannings.

The reason why we did that is that the posts that were derailing perfectly good threads were written like infomercials for Heisig, and I'm perfectly aware that there are people who are paid to log onto various forums and pimp certain products for free advertising. I'm not saying that this is necessarily the case here, but it sure looked like it.

If Heisig (or anyone else, for that matter) wants to advertise with us, they're more than welcome to contact us to make a deal. We will not, however, tolerate "stealth spam" here. This site gets over a million hits a month, and we don't give away free advertising.

    I'm lost.

What's this about? I can't be bothered reading the entire thread that was linked, but waht I did notice was the OP in that thread has a google ad at the top of their post. Is that what this is all about?

There was a thread about getting started in terms of studying Japanese.

THen out of the blue about 5 different posters each came and put up these long winded posts about how divine Heisig or whatever is.

Sounds like opinions to me? Why would it be moderated?

I don't understand how this can be seen as advertising?

It was certiantly odd to have such long winded posts and tha tmany just pop up seemingly out of the blue by a bunch of new posters.

That is true, and I'm not saying this is the case as you could be entirely right by saying its some kind of secret advertising, but what I'm saying is it could have just spurred debate and opinions from long time lurkers? I dunno, I don't know anything about the situation/history, but it just all seems weird.

Yes but we made a new thread to spark debate from long time lurkers.

The thread that bore the brunt of the hijacking was a thread for new Incoming jets.
