If my assumption was wrong, then what exactly did you mean by your post? Making monthly payments should be a given, since we get paid monthly, and that is when you must allocate your money towards the loan...
Payment as in one bill a month- it was a lot easier to plan a budget when only one bill showed up instead of 6.

I had various government loans with different interest rates + some private loans with higher interest rates. Consolidation worked for me and dropped my interest rate- not an iron rule for everyone, but just a possible suggestion for a way to make planning easier.

Depending on you situation and the terms in your loans there could be other options- deferment for 6 months as an example.

    (I have a house)

    Water: nil
    Gas (cooking) : 1830, flat-rate
Gas (water heater) : costs 6000 to fill the tank up...I think I've spent 9000 yen since august
Electricity: 3000-4000 in the water months, as high as 11,000 in the winter
    Rent: nil
Car insurance: 20,000/year (how did my rate go UP 2000 yen?)
    Car/road tax: 7200 yen
    Gas: ~4000 month
    Food: 20,000-25,000

I try to keep my spending to less than 70,000 month. Whatever's leftover from the expenses above goes into the fun account (ie put towards a new guitar, going to Tokyo a few times each month, etc..) and the 20man is for sending home.

When you get here, buy a ledger and keep track of your expenses. It's a great way to find out where your money is going and where you need to cut back.

All of mine were government loans as well, but they all had different interest rates and other stuff going on. I was able to consolidate them into one loan with the interest rates averaged out, which worked out well since the later loans had higher rates than earlier ones.

Yeah it depends on age, how long you've been driving in Japan, type of car, how old the car is, the prefecture you're living in, etc.

I think under 25 may be where you get hit with a higher rate.

20,000 a year is ridiculously cheap. I pay 7500 a month for a regular car.

I'm paying 12,000, but with full injury coverage for myself.

Next week I'm going to see if I can get a cheaper rate from mitsuidirect.

I have a kei-car too. When I first got here, they told me insurance was 31,000 for the year, then it was knocked down to 18,000 and they refunded the difference.

the 2man I'm paying now covers optional plans, I think. Check with your Boe/pred, because sometimes the town will have a group insurance policy for town employees, so you get a cheaper rate that way.

23, and they didn't ask for any info. I think I gave them a copy of my IDP, but otherwise, nothing else.

Loans or just savings that you don't want to tap into in case you have the sudden urge to spend some money from your Japanese bank account?

    Hmm!

    ¥47,000/month - Rent
    ¥20,000-¥30,000/month - Transportation
    ¥4000/month - gas
    ¥5000/month - electricity
    ¥9500/month - cell phone
    ¥5500/month - internet
    ¥30,000~/month - food (I don't cook.)
    ¥4000/month - private Japanese lessons

I send home between ¥60,000 and ¥80,000 a month for student loans and credit cards.

The rest of my money, I spend for fun or save. I could probably save more, but meh. I'm still getting all my bills paid (and having money left over), so I'm not extremely worried at this point in time.

If you want to know... I have ¥8600 to my name this month. Then again, I'm going home in two weeks, but in the meantime I'm a little strapped for cash! :S

It's all good man! I'm not saving shit until my next paycheck, due to getting my Japanese license, and an 80,000 yen credit card bill from my GW trip (Plus some shit thrown in from April). =I
