I remember reading that Japan iPhone won't work anywhere but Japan. Taking back home won't allow you to do anything.

Speaking of which, what would happen if someone went home without canceling their phone plan? Just emptied out their bank account, left the country, and didn't tell Softbank or whoever?

untrue, a friend took his unlocked softbank iphone back home last christmas and it worked.

This is the reason that softbank are now a lot stricter with foreign customers, twats do shit like this and fuck it up.
edit: the same people then come back to Japan and wonder why softbank refuse to give them another phone. I saw this happen and had to leave the shop from laughing so hard.

Well thats good to know. I had done some research this past summer and everything I had read said that it was impossible to unlock the Softbank iPhone. How exactly did your friend unlock his iPhone? Would it be rude to ask you for your friend's email address?

Though if you're around for two year with your iPhone, there will probably be a far better one around when you go home....

As for the people leaving Japan before their phone contracts are up.... thats just rude. I guess if you go that route you'd better be sure you're never coming back to Japan again.

so, any apple nerds know if it will be easy to switch out the sim card in my iphone when i go home?

will i have to jailbreak the phone to get it to work? or can i just stroll into AT&T and say, i wanna use this here?
Of course, if you're going to unlock/ jailbreak the iphone, then you wouldn't really need to strictly get an AT&T SIM when you come back to the US; You could use T-mobile or any other provider that uses a SIM too if you wanted to. (Unless you prefer AT&T as your carrier)
