Default Transitive and Intransitive verbs are evil.

I've had a bitch of a time learning the difference and when to use transitive and intransitive verbs. Any tips, good links, or explanations? Thanks!

Use transitive verb when the subject does something to the object i.e "I opened the door". Use intransitive when something happens to the subject "the door opened".

Just memorize the useful verb pairs and practice using them. That's the only way.

I've always found that the it's easier to think of the intransitive verbs as like semi-adjectives.

    ドアが開いている。 The door is open.

These things make me want to stab my eyes out. I can't for the life of me memorize them... no hope of keeping them straight. So far, they're the most annoying part of the Japanese language. Grargh.

Rin, I really like your way of thinking of them...

Now if only I could just remember the damn things!

Japanese verbs, part 2 Here's one link with some info about them. Don't know if it'll be any help, but maybe!

Yeah, I'm sure it gets much worse. Not looking forward to that stuff. Granted, I might be out of Japan and done with Japanese before I get into anything much more annoying. I'm not really in it for the long haul, I'm just learning what I can while I'm here. I'm amazed by those of you who are fluent or nearly fluent, or those aiming to be there in the future!

They seem hard at first. I thought they were the devil for about a month or two and then slowly started to get the hang of them. They also have patterns in their construction which help. i.e. 倒す 倒れる 壊す 壊れる。 Just keep practicing is basically all I can say.

The one I mess up the most is probably 決める and 決まる。I swear I hear japanese people using 決まる when they should use 決める but who knows.
