    Default How do you...

Okay, I know I come here for the exact same help about once a month but....help me out?

I need a game, about 20-25 minutes, working on the vocab How do you....

I can't find anything. The example in the book is 'How do you study English?' I can't even come up with good examples....

No games because I am literally sleeping with eyes open right now, but...

    How do you make cookies?

    How do you order pizza?

    How do you get money?

How do you write a letter?

    How do you eat sushi?

How do you use a computer?

How do you go to Narnia?

See, the only problem is that I don't think the kids could answer any of those questions....Their English is extremely low level (this is for my JHS 1nensei) and they all kind of suck at English.

You could do a charades type game. Write out "how do you (physical activity)" and have one kid read it and act it out and the other kids guess. It's not really practicing the grammar, but might get them more used to it. You could use

    How do you run
How do you ride a bike
    How do you play soccer
    How do you play piano
    How do you dance

    etc etc

I think charades is the killer app. Just make a table in Word with lots of activities represented by kerrazy pictures with the verb underneath (eg. run, ride a bike, as above). Divide the students into teams, get them to choose team names (and if they take too long just write down the first exclamation that comes out of their mouths - my students think it's amazingly hilarious to be called dousuruno, or nandemoii or whatever). Then get one person from each team to come to the front and mime and the first team to say 'How do you run/make a cake/write a novel/cook some eggs/etc? gets a point. The team with the most points gets hanko points.

Or replace gestures with drawings and turn it into a game of pictionary.

Like anything, it won't work with every class, but in my experience when it does work it works really well.

In case anyone ever wants to use this....

This is the game I ended up making.

The worksheet has 12 'how do you' questions, and 12 blanks. For each blank, I made multiple slips of paper with the answers. Each students gets a worksheet, and one slip (the answer to one of the 12 questions.)

When I say go, the children go around to each other and 'rock paper scissors.' Whoever wins gets to find out the answer the other person has.

(Person 1 in the example won the 'rock, scissors, paper.)

    Person 1 - What number?
    Person 2 - 12
Person 1 - (Asks question 12) How do you study math?
    Person 2 - I study every night.
Person 1 then writes 'every night' in the blank.

First person to do all 12 wins.

My JTE and I just did this lesson. We focused on gairaigo (english sounding japanese) so the kids could have fun with it. How do you say ~ in English? How do you say ~ in Japanese. Then for fun, we asked the kids How do you make (easy japanese food)? I asked them how to make onigiri, tamagoyaki, and gyu-don. They loved it.
