    Default Question on grammar classification

My JTE and I have been brainstorming and asking advice on this question:

For the purpose of teaching English sentence order, is is helpful to sort grammar points into a few all-encompassing categories (question types, complex/compund, "be" verbs, etc.)?
Or is it better to let each grammar point stand alone (since the differences between them would be confusing)?

I am wondering if grouping sentence order into categories would be confusing, because it can't account for all the overlapping exceptions: ex: compound verbs, some prepositional phrases ("about __" or "with ___"), etc.

If anyone has any experience with this, please help advise!
