Default What do most JETs do after the program?

Do most attend grad school? For those not attending grad school, what's the best approach to finding jobs after JET?

Keep working on your resume. I dont just mean re writing it so it looks better and fits all on one page (which is great too) but also work on things that you can put on there. Do your job well. Volunteer for things, take on extra jobs, do the PA thing if you get the chance.

There is really no easy way to answer WHAT DO MOST JETs DO...
Its all over the board, but if you want to know more i say get in touch with JETAA groups on facebook and linkedin and see what the professionals there are doing.

some do grad school. some look into teaching as a career. some stick around in japan and either teach elsewhere, or maybe do translation work. and then plenty of others just go back home and do something entirely different, perhaps related to their undergraduate degree.

the best approach to finding jobs post-JET is the same for anyone regardless of whether or not you've done JET: check out the want ads, go to career fairs, check out job websites and the websites of any particular company you may be interested in working for, contact the career office of the university you last attended (if they have such a thing), try a headhunter service, ask family and friends about available jobs, etc...

a more important question would be: "How do I best explain JET on my resume? (especially if it has very little to do with my career goals)"

my answer to that would be to laugh in your face.

Ever the optimist mothy. I've just read three posts with your scathing comments at the end of them. It's somewhat comforting.

It's my optimism that has kept me alive. That and the fear that the Keihin Tohoku will merely remove my legs from my body and not kill me entirely when I throw myself in front of it.

It really depends on the person... that's kind of like asking what people do after they graduate University. The best advice I can give is to start applying to things (grad school or a job) before you leave Japan. At the very least you'll have a better idea of what's available when you move home and you'll already have your resume out there.

If you can't find a job right away I would recommend applying at a Temp agency or something so you at least have some sort of income while you're looking! Savings can go fast when you're used to a cheque every month and then start getting nothing.

Also, most people doing the recruiting for PhD positions (I'm guessing grad school is the equivalent in the states ?) will assume JET is much more competitive than it actually is. You can always play along with this.

Well it's not that uncompetitive. What are the acceptance rates overall? 15%? (Just don't mention the fact that you competed against a herd of weaboo retards to get the position)
