Well "if" I get to the first interview I planned on wearing a black suit with shirt fairly solid tie not too loud. I have a bread as you see in my avi. Shoes will be shined also lol. Will they dislike the beard?

A question for current JET's--I'm curious what you see female JTE's wearing. I bought a skirt suit and pant suit last year for the interview and am leaning toward the skirt suit, but am not sure.

I was wondering if you perceived a trend toward skirt or pant suits in Japan. Every young female Japanese ALT in my Japanese courses I have only seen in skirt suits, so I assume that is the norm, but I would like clarification on this point.

    What bread. Stop those lies!

    Edit.
In seriousness, I would probably have less beard (preferably none as I'm not a man...) it looks well shaped but it seems quite wide. I dunno, i dont mind facial fair, but i think moustache > beard > full man beard in these situations.

I wore a pants suit last year, but I'm thinking about wearing a skirt if I get an interview again. Skirts seem to be more common in Japan, but based on what I saw of the people at last year's interviews, there was an almost mixed bag of pants and skirt suits, even some nice black dresses.

I want to go with what's more common, but I feel a little ridiculous in skirts. There's something about the pants suit that makes me feel like a CEO, so I'm not sure what I'd choose.

At almost all formal events, my JTEs wear skirt suits. I would highly recommend skirt suits for girls...

    ...if they aren't fat.

If you're a fat girl, don't even fucking try to wear a skirt suit; you'll look goddamned ridiculous. Do the pants.

yeah, because who needs free flowing drugs and alcohol fueling adventorous sex with taut, lithe young bodies when you could wander around a dying town in the freezing cold with a can of asahi super dry in your hand while some toothless old farmer shouts at you.

Looks like it's been decided for me, at least... Skirt suit it is.

I felt too formal in my trouser suit, so I went with pencil skirt, sexy stockings and killer heels. Musta worked!

    Thanks a ton, word.

Also, um... to the more fashionable women on this forum--is mid-February too early for a grey suit? I know this is probably way overthinking it... but my skirt suit I really like is sort of a warm grey. Any tips?

And Hikari, it sounds like your interview outfit was as awesome as your avatar (best character ever).

I don't think it's a matter of "what do female teachers in Japan wear?" I think it's a matter of "how professional can I look in this interview?" You'll be interviewed by a Japanese Bureaucrat, an Ex-JET, and a native speaker Japanese language professor. They won't be asking themselves "does she dress to fit in?" they will be asking themselves "is she dressed professionally?"

In short, wear what you would wear for any important job interview.

    For guys... Do the pants.

Not tryin' to be rude; again, please remember that I'm a whale biologist!

If you're fat, loose-cut pants will help minimize your hideous obesity. A skirt (particularly the pencil skirt that big girls inexplicably wear) will call attention to the fact that your midsection is substantially larger than your legs, and you'll look like those ballet-dancing hippos from Fantasia.

Whatever you do, applicants, don't wear clothes that are too tight. Even if you've got a rockin' bod, you shouldn't be showing it off. The advice just goes double for those of us with less awesome physiques.
Respectfully, I suspect that I'd usually disagree with that first part.

Fat girls, I doubt you look better in a skirt than you do pants. You probably think you do, but trust me... you don't.

The second part is not bad advice; permit me to expand a little on it. Hot girls--be careful. You don't know if there are going to be women on your interview panel. As I'm sure you know, attractive women face hiring discrimination from other women. Fat, ugly girls will have an advantage if interviewed by a panel with more women than men. I'd take RL's advice a little, here. Play the professional angle more than the attractive angle when choosing attire, but be prepared to play it by ear when it comes to body language and social relation in the interview. If you go in and you're dealing with three guys, turn on the charm. If you go in and you're dealing with three women, keep it professional and matter-of-fact.

Fat girls, just do whatever. If you're dealing with women, you'll have an advantage. If you're dealing with men... good luck.

Grey suits - go for it. I think a nice blue-grey often looks a lot better on blondes than typical black pinstripe types.

I agree. The black pinstripe will be the standard dirty-blonde uniform, and it might be better to do something a little different. Unless you're fat. Then, pinstripes will be far more slimming than the acres of a single-color fabric required to make your suit.

I can`t imagine they`d dislike a beard unless it`s an unkempt, nasty gandalf-esque thing. Someone from the forum (not gonna name names) got in last year and his beard was pretty wonderous.

So I guess if you`re gonna rock a beard, make sure it`s badass.

All this talk is reminding me of the horror of taking out my ear piercings two days before the interview... So much blood.

Weird. There was no blood when I took out my nipple rings.

Lucky, the red blotches would have thrown off your skirt-blouse ensemble.
