Thread: Where to go in Japan

If you're going to beppu anyway, go from there, get the ferry to Uwajima in Shikoku, then drive up to Matsuyama and see a few of the temples from the 88 pilgrimage that are in the city (Ishiteiji is pretty cool) and hit up Dogo-Onsen. Then move up and drive across from Imabari to Hiroshima (??) on the bridges, from there you can either go to Okayama or go back down through Yamaguchi, stopping off at Shimonoseki, look at Kyushu from Honshu, eat Fugu if you like that kinda thing, there's a cool Aquarium there, then come back through FUK and back home. You can do it in 2 nights or take as long as you want really.

Oh wait, you're driving to Hokkaido. in that case. Same as before, and go from Hiroshima to Yokohama OR drive round Shikoku more, through Kagawa prefecture and from there go up to Okayama. I'd probably go with the latter if you've already seen Hiroshima etc and spend a bit longer on Shikoku.

I like that plan. I can drive from Fukuoka down to Kagoshima, back up to Beppu, over to Shikoku, and eventually make my way o Okayama. We are than going to travel to Osaka, Nara, Ise and Fuji.

It is the bit between Fuji and Hokkaido that is stumping me now.

I'm told it is crazy cheaper to drive than to rent a car there, and we need a car for our plans. it should only be a 2 day drive, I think...

You're not talking about your whole trip when you say 2 days, right?

how long are you staying there? if you are happy with a small car it's really not that expensive to rent.

If you are going between Nara and Ise, take some time between the two. My favourite two temples in the whole of Japan are between Nara and Mie- Muroji and Hasedera. Go and have a peek- hardly any Westerners make it down to them, but they are both simply stunning.

Also...I recommend stopping off in Iga (just into Mie-ken...it's not much of a detour) There is a Ninja museum and a castle that are both fun to explore. There is also a random village where they make all of the giant statues of tanuki. It is pretty surreal to see 100s of tanuki lined up around each house, and you can do pottery classes if you have time.

I know lots of good hikes in the Nara area too if you want to spend time out of your car...

Nikko. Temples and crap, Isn’t it where Tokugawa is buried too? Easily seeable in a day, just north of Tokyo.

But if you decide to go to Nikko, just a word of warning, apparently they frown on digging up Tokugawa and fucking his skull.

Nikko is really nice so I can recommend that! You can also check beautiful places like Happogahara and Iroha-zaka for nice nature!!
