I found this article surfing around. I think it did a really good job of portraying Japanese schools and breaking the stereotypes.

That was a good read. I found it most interesting when the author's colleague described the students otherwise rude and unruly behavior as a form of "shyness"... a reluctance to open up to learning the lessons that are taught in their classrooms. There are other lessons however, such as the daily school routines (which the author only touched on briefly) which still become a part of their life "outside" in Japanese society.

The article made me think of two brilliant films I have enjoyed:
    To Sir, With Love
    Stand and Deliver

Two successful teachers challenged with difficult circumstances. The latter, by the way was based on a true story!

This reminds me of the teacher in Battle Royale. He seems like a justified protaganist now. :P

Good article - certainly illuminating, but something I've suspected for some time now.

A very interesting article. I am expecting the unexpected. Every situation is different. Just be as positive as you can.
