Oh one more thing to add to the 'things to do while bored' list.

    - Count how many times a kid calls you 'kawaiiiiiiiii' (every single time now)
    - Decide what to buy from the supermarket on the way home
    - Choose one whimsical item to buy for your apartment.

    My results

    1. I met 10 kids today randomly so about 10 times
    2. Miso, dashi and rice. Y'know...the essentials. And icecream
    3. A bunch of flowers, so I can put them in my basket and cycle around town with flowers. Awesome. Yesterday I bought a thing that makes my toilet tap look like a tulip. It was that or a waving penguin.

Heh, thats not a bad idea.

Kids don`t often call me kawaii, so the better game would probably be how many students think im about 30 years old in a day.

    1. I met about 6 or so kids, I think 5 of them refused to believe me when I told them I was 23 and not 30something.
    2. Shopping list today is just fish - I have rice and vegables, but no meat-type thing.
    3. Is bug repellant stuff a whimsical item? I read a big long forum-thread somewhere about bugs, and now Im all paranoid.

What store did you buy the tulip tap at? I want one.

Yup good ole Hyaku-en. I couldn't put the leaves part onto my tap as it was too big, but the flower part goes on well. Much better than a penguin having a seizure

Edit: Just added 3 more kawaiiiiiiis to my score, with only 1 minute left until I leave. Awesome.

I enjoyed my toilet tap flower. The Gunma 100-yen stores have a lot of different varieties of them to choose from too.

(I am only 20% kidding. Vending machines and conbini can be a MASSIVE money suck if you don't watch yourself carefully.)
Don't let Tarquin hear you say that or you'll get a lecture on being a cheapskate.

I couldn't imagine what a toilet tap flower could possibly be... so I googled.

If this is it, it's pretty cute for something from the equivalent of a dollar store.

Yup that's the one I have, but sadly the leaf part doesn't fit.

Bummer. But even with just the flower it's cute, and it was cheap enough.

Well rather the flower than the spastic penguin!

Also: Finally found the CD drive in my school computer (damn thing was hidden behind a panel) so I can do more Japanese practise yatta!

    Hahaha! Yeah.... that'd get old.

(Obviously I'm way more impressed with this whole toilet tap phenomenon than I should be..)

I cleaned out my desk at work, since my pred left a bunch of crap and I like to have things very neat, clean, and cute. I've been studying Japanese and my motivation varies, but I've become more excited about it now that I'm using Genki over the JET Program course books.

I already made an extensive self-intro on Powerpoint, and I often wander around the school whenever I feel tired. No vending machines at the JHS though... probably for the best. I'm allowed to leave for lunch though, so that's nice.

I also did a massive tidy of my desk at my base school. Like a crazy tidy, and labelled all my drawers because I'm anal like that.

My flower fell off my toilet tap and won't go back on. Wahhh. There goes 100Y well spent

You make me jealous with all your 100 yen store talk.

How inaka do you have to be when you don't have a frigging 100 yen store?

I am hunting one of those babies down.

School stuff should also include: purchasing a load of stationary, tidying drawers to perfection, and playing with your desk chair to get optimum comfort.

I want to sort out all my preds-preds-preds resources as they're falling out of the folders. Must not be that anal-retentive

No one was at school, of course, little speech contest kiddies didn't come to practice on the day the JTE person wasn't there to force them into it.

Tomorrow is going to be ridiculously boring.

Going to the BOE... only one person will be there.

...that tulip tap flower only reaffirms my decision to head to the 100 yen store when i get my paycheck and just look for various random cute things to spruce up the apartment with. it still feels like im just living in some random persons place.

If you are sick of studying and walking around I'd really recommend working on some lessons or games for elementary school if you have them. I know as a new JET with zero experience it can be really difficult to imagine what you will be doing in class, but things like game boards and materials that will seem like a huge pain in the ass to create during the year might save your sanity now. Also it will make everyone think you are a super ALT and give a good first impression so you can relax later.

We've just been hanging out at the BoE everyday between visiting schools for intros and being shown around town. Our BoE is super super busy though, and even though we don't have anything to do, anything besides studying Japanese or researching lesson materials and stuff isn't tolerated. Our supervisor is cool with us dicking around, but the old men get pretty Jelly pretty fast :/

And so I find my self writting endless pages of kanji

I was thinking I should prolly work on my self-intro lesson...but I haven't even met anyone from my other schools yet. School starts next Thursday, but that first day is like, tests over summer exam material, so no classes, then Friday I go to one of my other schools that I haven't seen before. That, and none of the English staff is here...so I don't even know how much English they know at my base school either ><
