Thread: Grammar question! "The place I went to is/was..."

  1. #1

Default Grammar question! "The place I went to is/was..."

Can anyone help me figure out which is correct, and why?!

The country I went to is Spain.

The country I went to was Spain.

Moreover, how do these sentences change (if at all) when you modify the sentence?

The country I wanted to go to is Spain.

The country I wanted to go to was Spain.

    Thanks!

In both instances, the verb tenses should be the same.

The country I went to was Spain.

The country I wanted to go to was Spain.

The country I am going to is Spain.

The country I want to go to is Spain.

Technically, in your examples, either option would probably be correct. Realistically, the way most people use English means that the verb tenses should agree.

yeah, because who needs free flowing drugs and alcohol fueling adventorous sex with taut, lithe young bodies when you could wander around a dying town in the freezing cold with a can of asahi super dry in your hand while some toothless old farmer shouts at you.

    What about

This city I live in was Constantinople. (but is not Istanbul)

Just meaning that IT WAS something but now IT IS something different.

I don't think "This city I live in" works, but the "was Constantinople" part is correct.

"..is Spain" is correct in all instances as long as Spain is still Spain, but so is "This city in which I live...", so correct is not always easy or common.

Why not "I went to Spain", "I want/wanted to go to Spain"? If you are pointing at a map and trying to elicit an answer of "SPAIN!!", it makes the use of "...is..." a little easier to remember.

(Dinner table conversations with my English major father have obviously scarred me for life.)
