    Default Content Idea

OK, so I had this idea, right...

Basically, adding permanent content to this site. Eg, useful articles, interesting stories etc. I've seen a lot of really useful and well writting stuff in some topics, and even when the thread stays on topic, it eventually gets buried.

I was thinking of having a permanent gallery of articles for people to browse, and they would include a link to the original thread for adding comments.

A nice side effect is this would probably reduce the number of times new members ask a question that was answered in depth 3 months ago, just because they cant see / find the thread.

But, the source would not only be from posts. Members could write articles or stories specifically, or submit stuff from outside that we could re-publish (with permission).

The mechanics are already in place for the most part, as it comes with phpNuke, so what do people think?

Sounds good...my original intent of coming to ITIL (once I accidentally stumbled upon it) was to get information about JET, Japan, etc. and a lot of the questions are pretty redundant. Now I am awaiting my letter and get on here because it can actually be pretty entertaining. Also, a lot of the regulars seem to have a good time hijacking threads that are redundant, so it would keep info accessible. You guys are just FULL of great ideas. (BTW, I think a FAQ forum would be the best solution because it would be visible and might keep down errant posts)

I like Matt's idea of keeping it separate from the forums but linked to any relevant threads. Maybe group it into regional sections the same as the forum groups, e.g. 'Japan', 'JET', 'Kanto', etc.

This could be just what the site needs.

Yes, I think so. How about, each article will have the article itself followed by any relevant quotes from the forums, e.g.:

    OBTAINING A JAPANESE DRIVING LICENCE

Article, blah blah blah nani nani.
    sadsaffubfiobf oifs fofba fco osv
niosdnf osvndv. Basic stuff about the topic.

'I've heard that driving schools are......'
    - dobharrison

'In Okinawa there's a driving school run by a squid, etc, etc'
    - IniKamoze

It seems to me that if you're going to link relavent threads and links, that actual pages rather than forum entries would be preferable. If you had pages, it would be very easy to just have a "submit a relevant link/post" form to add into a sidebar of sorts.

I do like this idea. The lack of anecdotes and such was something that I was sort of puzzling over the other day. Just the chance to read other people's stories and such gives me something to do when I'm at work on nights before week-long breaks and there's fuck all people around.

I guess, but my reasoning is that not everyone can be bothered clicking onto a thread (a lot of which have been hijacked anyway, apparently) and reading it. So having 3 or 4 relevant quotes from the forums here detailing personal experiences would add a bit more to the story. It could also illustrate any differences of opinion or ESID. For example, the article states that getting a licence in Japan is really difficult, but one person knows of a test centre in Okinawa that accepts bribes. Then people would see that the situation isn't so clear cut without clicking on a link and going through a thread. The threads and links are only there for anyone who wants more information.

Right, I've got no problems with quotes and such as well.. thats way cool, but you can always add forms to submit comments and links and things of that sort, but they would be screened in a way.. not automatically up so that an admin could check the relevance and whatnot.

Much like the comments on a blog or something.

It's just another idea.. I tend to think of threads here like brainstorming. My ideas aren't great, but I like to throw them out there. I'm not saying your idea's not without merit, but by putting an extra step in there, it's easier to get only relevant info up without having to delete trolling or spamming after the fact.

EDIT: to say that i clicked the links too and also to change SMAPping to Spamming.. cause i'm an idiot and apparently have Japanese boy bands on the brain. *shudder*

Ah, I see! Sorry, I misunderstood your original post. I thought you meant having quotes was pointless because you can just link to the original thread.

So on second thoughts, I think your idea is a good one and it would mean less work! Doing it blog-style is probably the best way, then.

EDIT: I should create www.squid.co.jp myself if everyone's gonna keep clicking on it!

HA! I knew i could coax an agreement out of people.. i just had to work at it for a while..

I'm just glad i can finally put part of my grad degree to use, even if it's not something I can actually implement. Its nice to know that paying attention in my interactivity design class paid off.

Thats kinda creepy.. you sound a lot like me when I finally got my paid account at LiveJournal.. I spent hours tweaking all the newly available features.

You might want to keep that excitment level down.. I don't know if it's safe to be giddy like that around computers.. they tend to sense the overconfidence/excitement and go wonky.

    Also, re: the squid site..
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA I really wish i had that domain..

Regarding linking to the original thread:

Since I imagine most of the threads we add will have died and been buried, I dont see a problem with going through and deleting / consolidating stuff. I'd like to leave the thread unlocked so that new comments could be posted. This would then bump the thread back up in the main forums, so the poster should get a response.

Whatever their original forum, these threads would be considered weapons-grade information, and heavily moderated with flame-proof suits, and a big delete button.

What about going for t3h pwn4ge and adding the wiki module? It's based on guiki according to the post.
