Thread: International Studies = Job?

    Default International Studies = Job?

I still have another year or so in my quaint little area of Japan, but already panicking about what to do on my return to the states. I graduated university with a Bachelor's in International Studies and a minor in TESL, and I was wondering what career any retired JETs with around the same credentials happened to find.

I do have an okay interest in Japan, even my fiance is Japanese, but I really would like to work in the US or possibly Europe (but the Europe part is just a pipe dream most likely). Education field is great, but I really want to see if I have any other options to branch out with.

So, in short, just wondering what my fellow Int. Studies majors got themselves into afterwards. Looking forward to the replies if any.

Yeah I was thinking the same, but I can never seem to find anyone who has managed to get this sort of job to have a casual Q&A with lol. Always find them speaking in a large conference or receive a very business-esque email. Maybe someone will pop onto the thread at some point

Maybe join a JET Alumni mailing list or something, or cruise facebook? It doesn't hurt to hit random people in the industry up with a "hey can you help a bro out?" as a fellow former JET. At worst they don't respond and you haven't lost anything anyway. People generally like being helpful, though.

Thank you for the advice. This post is actually just one of many things I've been doing to try and fetch information. Just thought I'd toss it on the forum and see what helpful information I can fish out while I look around.

Linkedin is also a great resource to check out what other JET alumni are doing.

Actually this is exactly what I did. I was in International Studies Major (concentration in Chinese and Japanese Language and Culture) with a minor in Linguistics and a certification in TEFL/TESL

I loved working on JET, both the two years in the classroom and the three as the PA in the prefectural office. But it was the three in the Kencho that really made me realize that I liked working in Education but not necessairly in front of the classroom. I liked working with teacher training, study abroad programs, orientations and such.

So in my last year on JET i started looking for International Education Jobs. I was mostly looking at higher education institutions (good resource here - HigherEdJobs - Jobs in Higher Education ) and hoping to either work with incoming international students or work with outgoing study abroad students. My (our) experiences as JETs going through pre departure orientations, post arrival orientations, mid year siminars and returners conferences really was the "Experience" i needed when applying for some of these jobs. -- especially because i spent 3 years planning and doing these types of things in my prefecture.

Also if this is something you are interested in look into NAFSA (nafsa.org) they too have a job posting site, but are also the TOP DOG when it comes to international educaiton as they have not only BEEN IN the feild since the 40s or 50s they started it!

I am currently taking part in the NAFSA academy, and wow if i didnt already have a job i could have easily found some good ones just from the networking alone as part of being a member. I get weekly emails and we have a facebook page where people post opportunities all the time.

There are other options out there like the foreign service and embassy jobs, but most of those require you to move all the time and cant be specific on where you want to be long term and i have a family now so i went this direction. also most of them require a masters which i currently do not have...

Wow, I really was not expecting to get such an incredibly helpful answer this quickly. Thanks for the extremely detailed post! I will definitely look into all of this, especially NAFSA.

Really gives a ton of confidence hearing from someone with nearly the same background education.

Great men of action never mind on occasion being ridiculous; in a sense it is part of their job.
