Default Applying with a spousal visa?

So, I did two years as an ALT on JET. In a few years when I become eligible to be a program participant again, I'm considering applying for a CIR position but before that time my partner and I are hoping to be married. I couldn't find this on the website, but does anyone know if it's possible to apply to JET as a US citizen currently holding a Japanese spousal visa? I know plenty of JETs change over from their instructor visa to a spousal visa after they make it to Japan and get married, but what about the other way around? If accepted into the program a second time, I assume my visa wouldn't have to be changed again. Is that correct?

It must be possible, as my friend who has been married a long time, came back to the program still married.

Good to hear. Now that there may be hope I guess I'll try and get in touch with a consulate for an official answer. Thanks!
