    Default Contact lenses

Has anyone ever had contact lenses prescribed while in Japan? If so, where and around how much?
I`m getting a bit sick of glasses and fancied a change but I`ve not the slightest clue as to where I should go.
Should add I`ve never had contacts before.

    Many thanks.

you'll need a prescription so first time you'll need to go to one of the bigger contact lens stores/an optician for an eye test etc. Once you have that you can buy the lenses online/from costco at a cheaper rate.

You can order from websites based in the US, but getting a discount can be a bitch - you can't import the amount you need to buy to get a discount on most sites. The upside is that you don't actually have to send them the scan of the script/letter from the optometrist.

There are a bunch of contact lens specialists in the closest large city to me - ask your teachers for a recommendation if you speak decent Japanese. If you don't speak any, ask your BoE/PA/Prefectural CIR for English speaking optometrist. You might end up seeking out an ophthalmologists instead, which is probably better, but commensurately more expensive.

Go for 2 week disposables for the best value. Daily disposables suck.

I disagree, daily disposables save on solution cost, which can get pretty expensive. It also helps for people transitioning into contacts, because you don't have to worry about storing them. There were times when I used my contacts on and off, and it felt like a waste opening a month-long pair for only one or two uses.

Daily disposables aren't as comfortable as longer term contacts however. In my experience, the shorter the wear time, the less comfortable.

Getting my eyes lasered was one of the best decisions of my life, I recommend it to anyone getting sick of glasses. It's amazing.

    Thanks for all the info!
Hoping to get laser eye surgery at some point, but for now I`d like to give contacts a go.

If you'd feel comfortable getting the appt done back home (depending on your level of Japanese, I'm assuming even the most wonderful of J-speakers doesn't come to Japan with optometry ready levels) you can always have your first appt back home and order online (like others suggested). Also a lot of people assume this to be the case (particularly US newbies who don't understand insurance because ours is so shtty) but J insurance won't cover the cost of getting contacts. That said, I can't comment on costs as I've always bought online (have to travel to the big city for a contact appointment where I am).

My experience here was that it wasn't too hard. The just ask you what looked better. The chart was a bunch of Es.

Also glasses here tend to be cheaper than the States.

Glasses are hella cheap. No wonder why everyone has one.

Should mention I am from the UK (if that matters at all). My Japanese is pretty good but not to the level where I would understand what an optometrist is saying. I`ll give it a go and see what happens. If all else fails, I`ll wait until I head back home for Xmas to get the initial appointment. Thanks again.

its really not that complicated. If you have enough Japanese to walk in the shop and say you want contact lenses then you have enough to sit through an eye test. Think about eye tests you had in your own country, was the dude going on about how your macula had retinal pigmentary changes or was he just going "which is clearer, number 1 or number 2?".

Also, eye tests here involve looking at horseshoe shapes and pointing in the direction of the opening. No real speaking ability required.

What kind of store do you think mothy actually went to, guys? My guess is it was somewhere completely unrelated but the staff were so worried about turning him away that someone just ran across the street and fetched a box of contact lenses

My bad, I assumed. Good luck--let us know how much it costs, I'm still on the fence about getting them here because of the trip involved!

And like most things you'll need to do in Japan, all you really have to do is speak English like an offensive stereotype to communicate.
