    Default Kiwi 2015 applicants?

    Hey-a,

Are there any fellow kiwi aspiring JETs lurking around here?

If so, how was your interview? How are you finding the long wait?

Do not worry Prasada. There are many Kiwis out there.....but you know that we are not the most active bunch of people when it comes to technology.

I am a second year JET from Christchurch, so feel free to ask any questions

Aww sorry. If it makes you feel any better, I know arseloads of kiwi JETs. We used to have a regular here who's been in Japan almost as long as I have. He's not on much these days but that's 'cause he lives in Tokyo now and is doing cooler sh*t.

yeah, because who needs free flowing drugs and alcohol fueling adventorous sex with taut, lithe young bodies when you could wander around a dying town in the freezing cold with a can of asahi super dry in your hand while some toothless old farmer shouts at you.

Do you even have internet down there? The Kiwis I've met don't seem to know what shoes or deodorant are, so I figured things must be pretty basic.

It is a pretty new development. From what my family has told me there is only access every second day from a communal computer that is stationed down at the local dairy.

It's cool, Kiwis can take a joke. They don't have a massive inferiority complex.

Of course we have internet down here! All you have to do is solder some straightened out paperclips together and attach them to a tin-foil satellite dish - we learnt how to make them in metal work at primary school. It works a treat!

Thanks for the reply! I'm from Chch originally, living in Wellington now.

I just wanted to compare interview experiences with other NZers since I'm now just hanging out in a 2 month period of second guessing everything about that 30 minute slot. Do you remember much about how yours went? I'm pretty sure mine was alright - I failed at all of the Japanese language tests but, as far as I can tell, I don't think that matters. Other than that, I'm pretty sure I answered quite well. I just keep dreading that I won't get in because I might have come across as seeming too straight laced/professional, and not 'genki' enough, though I was smiling, nodding and trying to seem enthusiastic.

I remember that I was nervous as hell. When I first walked in one of the interviewers looked at me and said "You work at the casino? Does that mean you can help me win?" and from there my nerves calmed down a little. Then came the Japanese part. I have a diploma of Japanese language so should be relatively decent, but my mind was shot. I couldn`t for the life of me remember how to answer what the guy was asking. I left thinking I had screwed my chances over. The security guard said to me that everyone he had asked that morning had said exactly the same thing to him, so I should not worry. So I am saying it to you, do not worry! I think compared to many countries our interview is quite straight forward and a more easy going environment. I know they could see I was nervous and shaking like Christchurch did those few years ago, but it all seemed to turn out fine. I am sure it all went fine and I know the wait is a drag but well worth it in the end.

My friend actually went through the interview this year. From her experience, it seems to have been run the same as mine was a couple of years ago. She is currently taking over my apartment in Japan with all her ski gear, but has said that she felt the same as you seem to have felt.

I know it's OT, but I pray that neither BJ nor Jiggit ever leave ITIL.

Wow. What did I ever do to you that you should wish such a fate upon me?

That was mean. I just always assumed you would stick around to take the reins from Word when he leaves.

Haha! I was shaking like that too! Slightly off topic, I know a couple who did JET in 2011 and were placed in Sendai, and so had their hometown destroyed by the February earthquake, then a few weeks later, had their new short-term home effected by the Japanese earthquake/tsunami!

Thanks for your reply, it puts me at ease a bit. The first thing the interviewers asked me was to tell them about myself, and I basically just came across as an ultra boring person "I'm an early childhood teacher and I love teaching, I also wrote my thesis on Zen Buddhism and I love studying." I didn't say anything about enjoying socialising, or sports, or traveling. I was able to mention those things a bit later on in the interview, but I keep kicking myself for coming across as too much of a nerdy introvert right at the start of the interview!
