    Hey guys,

I just got shortlisted today (Canada) and am very excited. Due to some personal issues, I had a very hard time
keeping up academically this semester and will have to take some courses in the spring/summer semester in order to
complete the requirements for my degree. Would it be acceptable if I finished by July 20th or so? Has JET ever been known
to accommodate candidates for something like this? Please let me know, thanks in advance.

My understanding is that in order to get your teaching visa you need a college degree. Getting a degree on July 20th might be a bit short notice. Perhaps this is a question better suited for your consulate.

Do you mean graduating on July 20th? Or just finishing your last classes then?

I graduated on July 14th (though I finished my degree in June), but in the UK at least JET accepted an official letter from your university confirming that you have completed all requirements to graduate.

There have been JETs who have come out with group A only to jump straight back on a plane to go back for their graduation ceremony. As Moses said as long as your transcript says you have passed enough classes to graduate it doesnt really matter when you get the actual piece of paper.
Great men of action never mind on occasion being ridiculous; in a sense it is part of their job.

I can only speak for the US here, but Proof of Graduations are supposed to be turned in by the beginning of July. However, there are universities that are slow in getting their grades in. We can generally accept a late PoG until sometime mid July at the latest. The 20th might work if you're in Group B and would be flying out 2 weeks afterwards on Aug 1st but that's up to your JET Program office. You'd have to turn in your PoG on the 20th or 21st. If you end classes on the 20th then it might be a no-go - schools usually need a week or two to process all the grades professors turn in and update their systems. But if that's the day that you expect your grades to be registered in the computer, it's possible.

For the US, it says you have to be conferred a degree by July. I think the deadline is July 10.

You want to call your consulate and explain your situation.

You have to remember that when you graduate it still takes your university senate some time to sign off on your degree. I know I will be finished my classes and exams at the end of April but I won't receive my actual degree until June. If it is for a job you can request to have your degree issued sooner; however, it may require a small amount of money to do so.

Hey, so I noticed that you have posted that you are now an ALT in Japan.

So how did the degree completion date work out?

I may be in the same situation as you next year so I need some advice 😀

A CIR in my prefecture literally got his degree two weeks before departure (he was group B) so if he was able to do it, then I'm sure others can as well.

Well I managed to convince my University to let me do a haul of credits this semester to ensure I'll be done come year end,

So I guess all I have to do is make sure I study hard and make sure I get an interview!
