You have to pay residence tax to reside somewhere. It differs based on where you reside.

There's a lump sum and also an option to pay it in installments. That could be a reason people are confused.

If you're american, you don't need to pay anything for two years, if you filed the right paperwork.

It will vary depending on income as well. noobs pay less than old fogies.

The lowest I've heard for a full year is 100000, the highest was like 300000.

Do people on the new contract still get reimbursed for it?

I don't think so.

Thankfully, my town still compensates me for it. They threw it in last year as a bonus to make staying another year more attractive, as it wasn't listed in my older contracts at all.

Yeah first year it was around 16,000 I think. This year it's going to be about 170,000.

Ya, my residence tax is 14000 a month, which was being paid for by my employer.

Keep in mind you are responsible for paying for your residence tax before you screw off from Japan as well. Many people around me have learned this one the hard way when they had a 2k bill as they were leaving.

From what I remember, my school paid it for me. I don't think I had anything extra coming out of my pay to cover it.....
I know this is a few years out of date, but between 2004 and 2009 JET pay was Y300,000/month. I got Y264,000/month in my bank account. I honestly can't remember what the Y36,000 was for - tax?
