Thread: TEFL with a practicum or volunteer?

Default TEFL with a practicum or volunteer?

Hi, there! I’m currently an alternate this year for the JET program, but I'm not expecting to get called up at this point. Looking forward to next year, I’ve been considering taking an online TEFL course. I know a lot of people dismiss it as unnecessary for getting in to JET, but I really think it'd be useful to fill in some of my gaps. It seems a lot of people value 20 hours or so of practicum teaching, but the high-end courses including practice teaching can be pretty expensive. I’m sort of on a thin budget, so I was wondering if it would be comparable if I took an affordable online TEFL course (say 120-150 hours) and then did some volunteer ESL teaching or tutoring in my community on the side?

Do you believe that would be a good substitute or would the judges prefer a practicum?

PS: I also have quite a bit of experience with students as I’ve worked in a K-12 tutoring center for a year and a half and have taught groups and done lesson plans. So I’m not sure how much more classroom experience I need but I’m sure doing ESL would be important.

What are you planning on doing after JET? I'd never recommend doing anything solely to get accepted on JET. If you're planning on teaching ESL as a career then the practicum would be useful. Otherwise it's just throwing money away. There's no guarantee it'll get you into JET and plenty of people get accepted without one.

You're here for an extended holiday and to slam as much poon as possible. A TEFL won't make much difference at all to your app or your time here
